Look at Sentret. Gen 2's Rattata clone. It's on 2 routes and Rattata is on 22. Surfing across the ocean? You're not running into Qwilfish or Corsola, it's all Tentacool all the time. At least Hoothoot is available on a lot of routes! But not as many as Pidgey, which is on more, more of the time. Ledyba or Spinarak? More rare than their counterparts in Caterpie and Weedle.
Want Houndour? Slugma? Sneasel? Misdreavus? Murkrow? All in Kanto. Phanpy? Teddiursa? Skarmory? Gligar? All on an optional route at the very end of Johto.
But hey, at least you can rely on gyms to help you learn about these Pokemon! Oh wait. Falkner uses Pidgey and Pidgeotto. No problem, I'm sure Bugsy will show us Pineco, Yanma, maybe Heracross! Oh, nope, it's two cocoons and Scyther. How about Morty, I'm sure the Ghost type gym leader is using the new Ghost type! Nope, Gastly, two Haunters, a Gengar, no Misdreavus. Well, at least Chuck has Hitmontop and Heracross, right? Nope, more gen 1 mons. Jasmine? Two Magnemites instead of Skarmory or Forretress. Pryce? Seel and Dewgong instead of Delibird or Sneasel.
It's a recurring problem I've seen, it's not rare for people to think half of these Pokemon were from gen 3. Because they barely ever fucking see them, if they see them *at all* in the games.
