They're both awful. At least I don't mind Venusaur's R/G/B sprite to use it there. I can't stand Incineroar in anything Pokemon, Smash is the only place I've seen it look nice, but not even in every shot.

See the issue here is that being ugly is part of Venusaur's design, he is a big, ugly, warty frog/toad thing. Incineroar on the other hand isn't actually "ugly" he is just a shitty design in general. So all in all Venusaur does in fact look better.

Blastoise who has always been shit since Gen1 and surpassed by 3/4 of the water dex and the one no body touches in any serious competitive battle?

Venusaur at least got a manga, longest TV appearance after Pikachu and a canon starter status.

the "successful" Blastoise never got anything for him except Pokemon Blue because America loves guns.

and Charizard is just enjoying anime fame while it's crying in the games because of Stealth Rock now being permanent thanks to LGPE.

Venusaur never been a bad Pokemon in any media at least.

There's degrees of ugly. Things that are conventionally ugly can still be cool to look at, there's the fascinating, macabre, but still ultimately repugnant kind of ugly, and there's badly designed.

Venusaur is a cool, monstrous ugly. Then there's shit like Reshiram, which is such a trainwreck that it's almost interesting. Then they'res shit like Druddigon where the only thing you can ask is "why?"

That's a good point, there isn't such a requirement. Venusaur isn't "beautiful" but he isn't ugly either. He looks like a proper monster. Hell, I even like some supposedly ugly mons. But personally I don't think starters should be ugly, or at the very least their 1st and 2nd evos shouldn't look nice and then suddenly turn ugly (looking at Blaziken here). Ugly mons have their place but you have to draw the line somewhere...

He lost a lot of popularity over the years for many reasons

- No siginificant appearences in anime or manga and when he does he just lose to Charizard or used by a one-episode character

- never been competitively viable it became a running joke in Smogon and VGC community

- Some people think it's looks like a digimon for out of nowhere cannons

- many people claim that it ruined Wartortle's charm and design by losing its fluffy ears and tails

- Pretty much got outshined by other water starters like Swampert, Greninja and Feralgatr.

Blastoise is just praised for being a many people's Pokemon Blue memory.
