aesthetically speaking, pansage is one of the most iconic looking pokemon in existence

He could have EASILY passed for a gen 2-3 starter and has a far better design than most grass starters

yes there was, they wanted an unnecessary long dex (>muh kanto 2.0) with evolutionary families that could perfectly be two members but were stretched to three (e.g iceacream, gears) and filler mons that were shit (Electric/Ground fish, special snowflake, etc).

Yeah, I always thought Simisage kinda fit that sort of abstract animal + element aspect that a lot of gen one and two pokemon had. I honestly think one of the things that really define gen one and two aren't their simplicity, but their abstractness and not needing to be based off of some kind of real animal, yokai, or legend, sometimes pokemon could just be cool looking monster animals.
