My first game was XY, followed by ORAS, BW,SS, Yellow, Emerald, and now Diamond. Were Pokémon games always kinda easy and for kids? Yea, that doesn’t mean you can’t go too easy. In Yellow gym leaders might kick your ass 3-5 times before you win if you aren’t specifically grinding. You can get lost multiple places, there’s very little direct interference in what you do. Yellow was loved by kids. Same in basically every Pokémon game except XY and SM. Every game before the switch to 3D is definitely more difficult than the 3D games and the remake of an old game (ORAS) is definitely harder than XY and SM, the new regions. Every game after gen 1 is about the same difficulty though I’d say BW are probably the hardest of the era between gen 2 and gen 5.
All of the games did things to make themselves accessible to children via the trainer tips, random people giving advice, the trainer school, etc. None of the games, XY included, treat you the way SM does. SM throws revives and rare candies at you like they’re fucking candy, the characters go batshit at every thing you do, there is nowhere in SM you could possibly get lost or really explore, you can cure status ailments outside of battle via petting so you basically never have to buy status cures (buying cures for paralyze or poison in gens 6-7 for battle is 100% unnecessary and how many opponents are going to sleep/freeze you? You are also given many free status restores).
The map is another problem. It’s both shitty on its own and a huge disappointment when compared both with past regions and with what we expected when hearing that we would get a Hawaii based game in 2016.
The jungle is a tiny joke, Viridian forest feels more like a jungle, the cities feel smaller and less city-like than in any other Pokémon game except for fucking gen 1, cowboy town was weird as fuck and jarring as your second town in the region, routes/grass areas feel tiny, ORAS had underwater areas and SM doesn’t.
