I'm gonna evolve him to Decidueye then box him.
Rowlet might be the cutest Pokemon of all time but Decidueye is meh and I don't want to be stuck building a team around him.

I need to evolve him for the dex anyway though.
This is the first gen where you're actually allowed to have a full party instead of dedicating 2-3 slots to HMs and I'm not going to let myself be tied down to my starter.

sun/moon was the first time I did it because they were all fucking awful and I needed to spite that degenerate tranny seal. wishiwashi as my water type was the best decision made in that game

I replaced my starter with a Psyduck in White 2 and never looked back, and now Golduck is one of my favorite water types after a long and emotional journey together. We were closer than family.

I've done it since Gen V because the starters have been crap and I keep waiting for Game Freak to break the trend, but they can't, and if S/M or Let's Go are any indication of where the series is headed I doubt they ever will.
