Why is this series so popular? The anime is repetitive and the games are just average rpgs. What made it so popular?

Pokemon's popularity comes from its simple concept of capturing super powered animal in a ball and using them for battle. This is why Pokemon Go has became such a hit. Since all other media of Pokemon makes so much money, the anime does not has to bother about budget.

Which they do. But that one sold out simply because it's Lillie-related. Some Alolan Vulpix merchandise is just called Alolan Vulpix, while others are labelled "Shiron" to relate it to Lillie.

Thats true for the anime, not for the game. Pokemon is a video game franchise that introduces new pokemon though new games.

Pokemon is a video game franchise, they introduces pokemon though new game with new region form new generation. Since the entire concept of pokemon is you the player collecting all the pokemon,

You know very well why it became popular, it’s the very same reason Pokémon has it’s own containment board. It’s not nearly as popular nowadays though, not even with Japs (though that’s true with any franchise that still airs on TV), but it’s merchandise driven so don’t see it going away anytime soon.
