no region sucks, no pokemon suck, all pokemon and regions are good on it's own way.
there are only some bad stories and characters that ruin it a bit. ALL pokemon games are easy, there was never a single hard pokemon game, just ok-ish difficulty like colosseum/XD/PBR, but that's pretty much it.

You do realize that Johto is practically only the beginning of Johto, right? You still have 1 gym + the Elite 4 & Champion in Johto and then eight new gym leaders in Kanto + Red final boss. It'd make sense that the Johto side of the game ends at around the 30s/40s because you still have a long way to go

Speaking of the Battle Subway, this isn't related to the argument but I noticed that Gamefreak might have had a different plan for it originally with that map. Maybe it could have been a transit system between towns? Would have been neat to use that instead of fly and that would have made it a more interesting Tower clone if you battled to pass the time.
