Why not just omit Typhlosion and Delphox and just go with Fennekin and Cyndaquil? Cyndaquil is an echidna but those are close enough to rodents. And Fennekin looks like a chihuahua so yeah.

Among all the fucking animals to fill “Rat” with in a pattern you are designing for over 20 years and likely over 30 years, you pick Sonic the Hedgehog to represent a rat?
That’s the biggest problem with this whole Zodiac theory.
It is saying that GameFreak has a whole line of fire starters planned out (for at least the animals they will base them on), but for some reason decides to break the pattern twice. You have 5 out of 7 Pokemon clearly based on a dragon, Rooster, Monkey, Pig, and Tiger, which alligns with the Zodiac, but you pick a badger to represent rats and a fox to represent dogs, instead of having a rat on fire and a dog on fire.
Like why among all the fire starters, Tphlosion and Delphox are the only 2 that have such conveluted relations with their Zodiac counterparts, but the rest don’t?

It’s enturely possible they started with a rat design and a dog design, but they couldn’t get it to work so they chose instead to bend the rules a little. A Pokemon doesn’t start out fully designed at inception. It takes multiple iterations. The zodiac is a starting point that only requires the result to be visually similar to its reference.

An antelope(and every other example you gave) does not look close enough to a cow or sheep to work. It’s about looking similar to the animal. It has nothing to do with taxonomy. A drawing just has to look like the thing. A fox is visually dog-like. An antelope is not visually sheep-like. Nobody gives a fuck about the biology as long as it looks close enough to the source.

My argument is that a fox is visually close enough to a dog for the average person to recognise its dog-ness. Your argument doesn’t crash the theory because it assumes the theory doesn’t exist in the first place. The zodiac is a guideline that can be expanded upon as long as it retains enough visual similarities for the average joe to connect the dots back to the zodiac. This is why when people bring up the antelope it is a false equivalence. An antelope looks nothing like a sheep. A fennec fox looks very similar to a popular species of dog. Therefore Delphic works within the visual guidelines the zodiac rule. I will be the first to admit the zodiac doesn’t matter if the next fire starter is an elephant. I just don’t buy these minor nitpicks mattering that much to visual designers following a few guidelines

That's true though. You seem to be working backwards from the zodiac theory as a fact, and fitting fennekin into it.
Instead we should see how the facts fit the theory, and fennekin/delphox and typhlosion do not. Having to bend the rules makes for a pretty poor theory.

All the designers had to do is make a dog-like something. They did just that. Fennekin is a fox and fennec foxes look like some dogs. “Close enough” says the art director as he approves the design.
