Random encounters are the bread and butter of modern Pokemon, there are too many Pokemon per route for it to work in Sword and Shield where there will be likely 700+ Pokemon. Being able to walk up to the Pokemon you want to catch works for LGPE because it's not a bread and butter Pokemon game. You could argue for changes for the sake of change or you could accept that overworld encounters aren't where they want to take the franchise.

LGPE also had following Pokemon. Another step back for the series. My hypothesis is that GF is deliberately making the game take up as few GBs of storage as possible so people can download the games without having to use up all of their storage memory (or use additional SD cards). If LGPE were 4 GB each with the restrictions and cuts they had while still having the data for the Pokemon animations, you can bet your ass these games will take up a lot of GB.

The problem is they've ignored any positive changes or implementations they did make, like having over world encounters (couldn't they be alongside random encounters) and following pokemon which is a practically universally loved feature that they really don't have any good fucking reason tp get rid of.

Gamefreak is rich as fuck, they could have set points on each map where certain Pokemon spawn , this would allow you to have really rare Pokemon on an early route, but containing them to a hidden arena the player needs to discover themselves. Anything is better than then the current system of running through grass till the Pokemon you want appears. LGPE just threw Pokemon in grass without any rhyme or reason and it sucked. Structured OW encounters would be amazing.

The idea you have in mind would be great, but it's not plausible for every pokemon to have such a detailed routine, since there's so many of them.

A design where there are say, 10 different personality values, that each wild pokemon can have, that affects what their behaviour in the overworld will be like. For example one personality will run from you, another will charge at you, while another will follow you around at a distance or completely ignore you. The immersion can come from giving each pokemon the most fitting personality value, and making them only appear in areas that are fitting for them. They could also have a few extra personality values exclusively used for rare pokemon. This paradigm is much more plausible to make at low cost, and I think could make for great overworld encounters. I believe LGPE has some very primitive version of this, but it's not very good.

Not an argument. LGPE didn't invent overworld encounters. Dragon Quest used to have random encounters and then upgraded to overworld encounters. Chrono Trigger has overworld encounters.

There is not a single actual argument for keeping random encounters.

In Pokemon, catching the damn things is the main point of the game, which is why it would make much more sense to have overworld encounters. And not lazy encounters like in Let's Go, actual immersive encounters that take into account the Pokemons' characteristics and environment. Think something more similar to Monster Hunter when it comes to its monster finding mechanics. We've had the technology to do this for a while now.

Pokemon snap was also an on rails shooter with very, very limited animations and a roster of 63 Pokemon.

If Gamefreak took a 5 year break to properly develop this concept, like how BoTW took forever to develop as well, then it would be possible, sure, but, as we all know, gamefreak can't afford to stay that many years without a new mainline game because of how the franchise works, being spread throughout multiple different types of entertainment.

Would you want to spend 5 years without a new pokemon game? Do you think the anime movies, TCG, etc can all work without a single new piece of content from gamefreak proper? Do you think that a second, smaller team would be able to create high quality games that would allow the series to survive those years?

Random encounters are NOT a feature. They are a development shortcut for RPG battles. You can obtain the same kind of surprise in a overworld encounter scenario, just don't make it like in LGPE. Turning around a corner and finding a Pokémon you've never found before has the exact same effect.

It doesn't apply for Pokemon, because you have a different mechanic that works way better for "resource depleting" (trainer battles) and because mon encounters are an integral way on how you build your party. Octopath only barely comes close to this last point through one of the characters, and that's pushing it a lot.

You do realise that wild battles achieve that to a greater degree right?
Not only do you have recovery to deal with but also pokeballs which aren't exactly reliable until you hit the late game and unlock balls like the quick and dusk ball.
You're also more likely to take hits and status effects from the wild pokemon than you would the trainer because you're focused more on combat there while wild battles are mostly preservation of the opponent.

Regardless of the capturing however they all exist for the exact same reason across those four games.

You can't, you'd have to severely drop the amount of pokemon available to have the necessary time and detail to create a functional ecosystem of pokemon.
And by severely I mean less than 100 in a regional dex. Look at Breath of the Wild for example, the reason it has so little enemies despite the long development time is because of how much time it took to program in specific encounters and animations as well as reactions to sounds and actions done in a specific way.
It's not possible to do that with a roster of Pokemon pushing 400, maybe if they started with the resources from the very beginning but not now.

Yeah no, common battles aren't usually things that require skill and are only there for additional levels not unlike pokemon. You could say that there's a clear line between regular mobs and bosses.

Yes it is. It only seems not rare because you're not wasting time going through shitty loading screens and you're seeing a lot more Pokemon than you would with random encounters.

Not really. Chansey, Scyther, Tauros, the legendary birds, Dragonite, Hitmons, etc are still rare. They're just not a total fucking slog to find that require walking in circles like an autist.

No it isn't. What you've just described is literally what rarity is. Something that is hard to come by, something that takes time to find. Nobody wants your casual watered down version that shits out all of the previously rare pokemon in sub 5 minutes of trying to find it. There's no accomplishment in that.

So they're not rare.

Higher rarity + random encounters do add surprise.
Walking in to an area and seeing 10 pokemon immediately is what kills surprise.

Unless you're severely overleveled or you're playing a shitty game, every enemy should be able to kill you if you don't take it seriously. If you're taking them seriously, they should be nothing more than a drain on your resources, but being able to just waltz through all the mobs without a care would just make for a boring game.

There's very, very little RPGs in general where that's the case simply because regular encounters aren't there for the sake of a challenge but to train you for bosses that come up later.
