Anime is total shit regardless of main character and the only reason anyone even watches is because they're masochistically holding out for the one Pokemon league that Ash will actually win. If Ash were to stop being the main character, all of the people watching today would no longer watch this joke of an anime, and would instead do something else with their lives.

That'd be the right choice, but it probably wouldn't make for a much better show in the end. They would still have to include Pikachu, but maybe a new character would have a slightly different dynamic with Pika at least.
