Good fucking times. Arriving at Castelia City for the first time is still very memorable, I don't think I've ever been "wowed" like that in Pokemon game since then. It wasn't even like there was any graphical jump between gens IV and V, it was just a matter of actual effort on Gamefreak's part. I don't want/expect Gamefreak to ever do a 100% new set of Pokemon for a main game again but it was massively refreshing in Black and White.

I agree on the whole new roster being refreshing. Sure some of them were homages to gen 1, but it was still nice not seeing the usual suspects like Geodude and Gyrados.

Yeah Skyarrow Bridge and that segment in general was special back then, especially since it felt like the first third of the game was building up to it. The whole game felt like it was dripping with effort and felt so bold and different. I don't think having only new Pokemon and no old ones would ever work again, but it worked in BW.

A lot of the game feels pretty basic and easy now, but it's still really unique.

That’s the problem. Their not clones at all. Most “clones” only share the species they’re based on and that’s it.

I was at an arcade with my best friend at the time celebrating his birthday a bit early. It was just me, him, and his mom who hung out in the restaurant area.

We got there, played some games and about an hour or two in just decided, Pokemon. I don't think his mom was too impressed, but we were just too excited.

Damn, time flies. Still remember that playthrough like it was yesterday. It's the black sheep of the franchise but I think that just makes the strides it took shine so much brighter as the years go on.

B/W seemed like such an impressive jump for the series back then. Just replay B/W 2 and after that X/Y. It's mind-boggling when you compare this two games. Fifth gen just screamed GF FINALLY CARED but everything after that is a bad joke.

My favorite gen. The first gen since gen 1 that had so many new Pokémon. I loved seeing nothing but brand new Pokémon for the majority of the game I think it was cool how the intention was for them to fill similar roles in the ecosystem which is why some are similar in design to gen 1. The places, characters, the protags actually being adults. I was about 20 when gen 5 came out so it was so fitting. Two friends and I picked it up the morning it came out and played all day. The postgame after the elite four was the best with a whole other side to the continent then the elite four got much stronger the second time around so it was the last challenging Pokémon game especially with that Cynthia fight. I adored my team and trained nearly all 6 to level 100. I’ve replayed this with different teams more than any other game so far. Also the final iteration of the pixel style. Loved the static animations that were old school rpg-like. Pokémon could be intimidating in that old style the 3d has taken a bit of the edge off with certain Pokémon. I’m not surprised my favorite gen is the most hated because it was the most different at the time. I could care less nothing can dampen how much fun I had over and over with that gen I’ve thought about going back sometime again recently. Thanks OP for making this thread and it’s good to hear others still like gen 5 as well.

Same here my theory is that gen 5 was meant to be a soft finale for the original fans of the series. The more mature approach and new set of pkmn along with older protags it made it seem like that and with how simple and easy gen 6 was it felt like it was restarting and we won’t have another like 5 until 10 comes out I fear. That’s what it feels like the company was going for since many of its fans were adults or getting to be such.

I’ve read the reason why they’re similar is because they wanted them to fill the same roles ecologically. Just as we have different species of similar animals irl. Like they have bears in Japan but not the same species of bear, etc. I’ve read somewhere an interview around the time of release where he actually said that’s the reason there’s so much similarity. I feel that way about gen 4 myself. It was the last Japan-based region, and featured many evolution of Pokemon from prior games. Masuda himself said they were like a compilation of the series and that the names were chosen because they were the 'ultimate' minerals. Many features like safari zone and secret bases were not seen since.
And to cap it all off we learnt that prototype G/S had things which weren't realized until D/P.

I was a freshman in college when these came out. It sucks that I downloaded and played a translated ROM the prior September, so the actual NA release wasnt all that magical. I still bought and played the legit version on release tho.

I imported both HGSS and BW from Japan and it made me burnt out on the series so I didn't bother with B2W2 at launch. Kind of regret it since I didn't use the Dream World as much as I'd have liked to.

Black and White, in my opinion, were Masuda's magnum opus. It's clear that he wanted to try bold, new things so that they weren't just another Pokemon game on DS. There's just a lot of love in the games, like how the percussion would kick in when you start walking. It's a subtle thing, but I liked it. Same with the ferris wheel that you can ride on just because.

I honestly wish they would do the “whole new world” idea again because it was the most exciting thing to come across every single Pokemon with no preconceived notion of how they are. When I played SM I was really bored because I kept running into the same old Pokemon and none of them were ones I really loved. I had the same feeling with DPP.

I also loved the animated sprites. I thought it was neat to see animations play during battle and made the Pokemon feel alive. I feel like the art has moved into more spherical based designs because of how easy they are to make 3D. It makes the newer games feel generic to me.

TL;DR BW hit me at a good age, when I was lonely and browsing /vp/ a lot once it was established, and now I’ve probably out grown collecting these monsters and browsing /vp/

It’s like gen 4 was meant to be the final of the original 4 and 5 was going to start the new method. I adore both gens more than any other really while I still have fun with the new ones they had so many great features. I keep hoping they make an app that pairs with the base games (not go) that marries the poketch features and the pokewalker. Where you can interact like amie and the walker with one pkmn you take around and such and can put it back in the game later. But it’s all shit they won’t do unfortunately. I don’t think the games’ll ever be like those gens but I did enjoy how fresh and different gen 7 was. Gen 6 is probably my least favorite though

This sounds great and I'm surprised they haven't done it already. I agree on gen 7 feeling more fresh than 6. it was nice to have non-chibi proportions and a proper 3D map. I hope gen 8 can build upon that and be great.

Yeah for certain Pokémon I can definitely see that though the final evos were going for pretty edgy designs they went in a “cute or edgy” direction for sure almost all pkmn from that gen fit into one of those or the third category “goofy as hell”. I can see why people don’t like some of the designs for sure I still enjoy and love some but I like just about even pkmn in general aside from Stantler.

I’m surprised too like Go is fine for some people and all but for the core fans having our favorite to actually interact with and take around would be the best app for Pokémon they could probably make. I keep crossing my fingers they’ll do it. Yeah the chibi worked for the pixel style but felt off in gen 6. That and it was really easy and short compared to any generation. Same here I’m hoping the continue making improvements in gen 8 I’m nervous but excited

BW is unironically my favorite set of pokemon games. Not even BW2 - just regular BW.

And so much more. Even the look of the games and the sprites, as the last true new set of DS games, really was great.

I don't hate the newer gens like the rest of /vp/ - I liked gen 6, even though it felt unfinished, and I enjoyed gen 7, even with its problems. I'm very excited for gen 8. But gen 5 has a special place in my heart, and I've been playing since gen 2.

With all that said, gen 5 felt like GF really trying a bunch of new things. But it just didn't sell as well as they hoped, maybe, and so they've retreated back into comfort and haven't really tried nearly as hard since. >>37870054 put it well.

It was just a Sigilyph, which I think is cool now, but I have never felt that kind of feeling of "I legitimately have no idea what that Pokemon is" before. The decision of making all the Pokemon in the region new was such a good one.

I think the starters are shit but BW are still my favorite games in the series. Yes, even more than B2W2. The sequels were objectively better games, I realize that, but the magic was gone once I already knew what all of the Pokemon were.

My absolute favorite generation. I lost a bit of interest after gen IV, but going into a new region with only new Pokemon brought me back into the spirit. Every time I played felt like the first time I played Blue version. I had so much fun using and encountering only new Pokemon that I restarted the game the moment the credits ended to try it again with a new team. I ended up doing that five times.

/vp/ was amazing too. So much OC and so much discussion over the Battle Subway, Entralink, giveaways, battles, and trades. There was even a Wi-Fi general because people actually wanted to play and discuss the games. People even had confidence in GF's ability. There was only excitement over what the gen VI games would bring.

And the fact that the cutest Pokegirl in the world was introduced was a bonus too.
