Does anyone actually like PLAYING this game? I see people praising the edgy protagonist, liking Miror B, or enjoying the music, but have any of you actually sat down and played this recently?

This. Gale of Darkness is the far superior game and Colosseum is almost entirely pointless except for that it's the only way I know of to get a Ho-oh in Gen 3.

i finished it for the first time a couple months ago、and it was pretty refreshingly different to the main line games while still being closer to them than the spinoffs. the worst thing about it was purifying all the shadow pokemon and doing the battle tower for ho-oh but it was good overall.

Reasons why Colosseum is bad
>absolutely abysmal Pokemon pool, definitely the worst in any Pokemon game ever, you will probably use a Johto starter, you will probably use one or more if not all of the Legendary beasts, leading to every run feeling samey
>actually catching anything sucks shit since the Pokemon you're attempting to catch invariably has an attack that damages itself, you will probably have to make several attempts to catch said Legendary beasts if the whims of RNG gods are not in your favor that day

It’s pretty depressing. The Pokémon in the 64 and GC games had unique battle animations. I’ve always loved Persian for the way it grooms itself before attacking and espeon for being sassy as fuck. Even their fainting animations had charm. I doubt we’ll ever see that level of effort put into a Pokemon game again.

I'm pretty sure that the Pokemon animations for Stadium and so on were made by Nintendo EAD. Game Freak isn't credited as a developer on the Stadium games and I don't think Creatures actually does the animation work, just the ingame models. That would mean the animations for X/Y and so on were created inhouse by Game Freak instead. I could be wrong on this and Creatures could have done both, or maybe Creatures did Stadium and Game Freak did X/Y, or something.

As an adult, I could see these criticisms and probably wouldn't give it another playthrough. As a kid, I really loved this game.
I was so mad that I couldn't catch the suicune. I tried so hard. I did get the tyranitar and I still have my metagross in my platinum team at level 80.

One of my favorite games of all time and this is mostly because of the SOUL.

I replay this game once in a while, usually with a new interesting quirk. Recently i played jap colloseum so i could unlock jap celebit with the bonus disc i bought with it. Going for a living dex in gen 3. wish me luck!

i unlocked mew and deoxys on italian emerald via glitzer popping recently too. took me almost 500 days to get the number right after on-and-off rage quitting

Usually people mainlu praise it for being one of the earliest methods of introducing smarter methods of battling to general audiences. Gale of Darkness is better. More pokemon variety and more convenient mechanics like being able to save anywhere and the purification machine.

This so much. The Cipher Admins all had various strategies that you needed to learn and counter.

Then Gales gave us the Battle Sim which covered everything from Sword Dance to Baton Pass to even how to cheese Wobbuffet.

I played it last year, I like it, its a lot more challenging then the mainline games due to the limited Pokemon options and AI synergizing that can happen due to double battles.

The one thing I don't like is that the game reads your inputs before you act on the, which is bullshit. I recall a Pokemon of mine getting paralyzed, so I logically try and use an item to recover from it, every single time the Pokemon that stun spored it just knew to do it again on that very same turn.

that's what makes it fun
You have to choose pokemon that aren't "muh smogon meta op" and actually have a challenge.
The game being all double battles is kino as well, it's different.
I don't mind purifying, you're meant to switch your team around a lot during the game to stop yourself becoming too OP, only keeping a few like Espeon, Umbreon etc. in your party.
Agree with the rest though.

I can't really see the positive in being forced to use shit because decent isn't available. If it's such a great feature and now a flaw, why was it fixed, uhh I mean, not included in Gale of Darkness? I mean, I'll be the first guy to make fun of an anti-Unova dude because waaah I can't use Gyarados for the eighth game in a row, but having like 90% of all the Pokemon you can get in the game be worse than mediocre sucks shit. Doesn't help matters that Colosseum is already designed to be more difficult than most Pokemon games. This comes off as an excuse more than anything.

I played it back in 3rd gen. The 3rd gen doubles mechanics were kind of clunky (having to switch in after a KO, meant an enemy using spread moves could potentially KO up to four of your team in one turn), but it was a fun change of pace. I'm not sure I'd like it now, considering I play VGC exclusively so I'm used to the modern mechanics (as well as the physical/special split), but I barely have enough time to play my current games, much less go back and replay old ones.

I'd say it's not really a positive or negative, and is more just a matter of personal preference and the game's design goals. While GoD did have more pokemon available, it still wasn't a massively expanded list, and you were still getting things like Shadow Ledyba and Poocheyana early on

To be honest I don't even know what makes Gale of Darkness superior to Colosseum for me, they're essentially the same game or so you'd think. I just remember rarely getting frustrated or bored with it unlike Colosseum and got a team I liked

Believe it or not that's what I seriously believe. It's that unfathomable to me that people would proclaim it as the best in the franchise. It's like if someone told me their favorite Mega Man games are the Star Force games. Like, sure, they're good and all, but they're not even as good as the Battle Network games and THAT'S not even the best Mega Man series. It just doesn't feel right to me. Actually I just started watching Baki the Grappler, I saw a trailer for it on a DBZ dvd so I got the box set and have been RIPPING it, those guys are fucking honorable, wholesome warriors, it’s so fucking dope. I was fucking hooked after he fought that ape, and apparently season 3 is about to randomly come out on Netflix on the 19th (I’m just gonna pirate it, fuck netflix) so I’m pretty fucking hype dude. That’s the first show or anything that I’ve liked in awhile, so I’m fucking absolutely amped. My brother and I have been ripping RBYGSC and battling after each gym while watching it, I’m having a blast, but everything else from this day and age sucks, I just wanted to throw it out there that we all might find our silver linings lads.

The only thing they don't have is catching wild pokemon. The graphics are better than anything GF has ever done, the story is at least on the same level as BW/2, it has new gameplay gimmicks that aren't annoying and great music, it's actually challenging and has a pokemon pool that really requires you to use mons most people don't.
And XD even lets you catch wild pokemon kind of.

Also played Gale of Darkness and had some opinions reaffirmed.
Colosseum feels a lot more cohesive and forces you to actually use shadowmons. The sequel added shadow moves to mix up bosses I guess, and it’s cool that they let you use the moves yourself, but there’s no reason to use shadows when they’re underlevelled and are better served going straight into the Purify Chamber. Shadow being super effective on everything instead of normally effective also fucked with this.

The most recent thing I did in this game was buy the e-Reader+ and some cards on eBay and use Action Replay to get into the e-Reader+ room and basically battled all difficulties of every card I had, as well as endless mode a bunch of times, which is fun because you don't know how long you're gonna last. I have all of the packs except the red one. But, yeah, if you have a lot of cards endless mode is fun because it's just trainer after trainer but there's no restoring health or PP so it's really like survival mode.

Compare XD's overall content with HGSS or B2W2's overall content. Way less Pokemon, way less stuff to do, way less postgame. There's just more to do in general in HGSS and B2W2 and what you're doing in general is better there than it is in XD in my opinion. Those games even let you turn off move animations too!

Its meant to be a challenge, in the same way you had to deal with rental Pokemon in the Stadium games.

Colosseum is noticeably a lot harder then the mainline games, and that's one of the reason for it.

Also you can get both Mew and Deoxys "legit" if you have a flashcart, the Aroura ticket distribution ROM as well as the Aura Mew distribution ROM leaked a few years ago. You still need to have a regular cart and a link cable for Mew and two Wireless Adapters for the Aurora ticket distribution, though.

Technically that's a Gamefreak model too, all the Gen I and Gen II models were ported over from Stadium and Stadium 2. They actually forgot to fix Jumpluff's model in Colosseum when they added shadows to the game too. Since Stadium 1/2 didn't have shadows they had its cottonball puff things defined as squares, so the shadows look like squares.

Are you saying that the game would be the same whether the Pokemon pool was strong Pokemon or weak Pokemon? Do you think that makes any sense at all? Do you know how stats and movepools work and how having worse ones is a major detriment?
