It was a popularity contest but it was also a contest for a distribution, so rare pokemon were voted because people wanted them and alphabetically early pokemon were voted just so people could get the distribution for participating
I have no doubt that Greninja would have made it high on the list but a combination of people wanting a Protean Greninja and it being around the same time as Ash-Greninja making people hope they could convince TPCi to put Ash-Greninja in the games as a distribution definitely put it at No. 1, Arceus not winning a distribution vote is just weird

My issue is that everyone seems to somehow " like" the tongue scarf. He looked super creepy and gross in the Detective Pikachu movie, but my friends and the kids in the theater were all over that shit. I'm guessing he has some sort of Venom-like appeal or something? Now that i think about it...

The difference between this and earlier polls is that this was heavily marketed as a popularity contest, and the fact that the winner was going to get distributed was just relegated to a footnote. Kids were told to vote for their favorite Pokemon, and probably didn't even realize there was going to be a distro. That's why Greninja and Sylveon and Pikachu and shit ranked so high, people voted them because they liked them and were told to vote for what they liked.

I'm kinda with OP on this one. Greninja isn't a bad design, I just can't get over how fake his tongue scarf is. In the mainline games AND in Smash the models are terrible, they make it painfully obvious that his "tongue" is just a pink blob wrapped around his head. If they went to the trouble of making to look like it's actually coming out of his mouth it would be fine, but...

He always just looks like he's wearing a weird pink scarf separate from his body. I can't jive with that. Sack up and make some animations where the tongue recoils or he uses it to attack or something. And no, that pathetic flop he does where the scarf remains completely static except the tail end doesn't count. My point is the design is good in theory but the execution is lackluster, much like Delphox. I could never truly enjoy either design because of this laziness.

Having a model with a fully articulated AND retractable tongue scarf would be incredibly complicated and have a shitton of clipping issues if not implemented properly. What you want would be a job for an actual talented and hard-working animator/modeler and Gamefreak has none of that.

I would say that it's justifiable based on game performance because the smaller amount of joints and bones the model has means that it's less taxing on resources, but Gamefreak are the kind of retards that put models with hundreds of thousands of polygons in the fucking 3DS, not to mention that encryption/decryption issue they have, so the logical explanation is that they clearly have no idea what they're doing and are too stupid and lazy to fix the model even if it could actually be feasible on the Switch.

Hes a basic dragon design from gen 1 with a noticeable design difference from most dragons but still has the spirit. Charizard appeals to every little boy and stays with you. Honestly had they shown charizard instead of pikachu first then zard would of been the mascot. Hell zard gets as much pandering as pikachu does. 2 fucking megas, countless movie fights or cameos, it even got the point they gave a character a rival zard instead of a flat out different mega or something.

I am aware he can retract it. I am aware he can attack with it. So why not display him doing those things more often? That way it could be seen as a useful tool instead of a burdensome design fluff. If they decide to do so in the future i'd be all over the tonguescarf design.

Look anon. This is a frog. Frogs are inherently gross. What you're asking is for this thing to put away its drool covered tongue and replace it with a foamy mass of mucus and snot. Both options are disgusting because they're part of a disgusting animal and it's not at all an improvement in terms of cleanliness. If you focus on the details you wouldn't even like frogs, so it's not like it matters in the end. The tongue scarf is gross, but it creatively hits the ninja concept home while adding tertiary hues that create a pleasant and interesting color contrast. There's more pros than cons to it.

They weren't shoved off to the side. What happened was that Greninja stayed popular, in the Delphox line Fennekin and Braixen ended up being more popular and the Chespin line got the shaft on its own.

Venom is supposed to be disgusting, being a villain. Grenigger is supposed to be somehow appealing. And Venom doesn't wrap his tongue around his neck in a way that makes it hard to imagine him even not choking on himself, let alone being able to eat and vocalize.

Yes but at least for me it falls apart once you realize it isn't actually a flowing scarf but an organ that is effectively less practical than a circumcised dick hanging from your left cheek, and the opposite of what is functional for a stealthy design since it will often be trampled on and be constantly exposed as soft tissue to the outside elements.

Legs have bones, tendrils, joints and skin that protects them, so trampling over them is far harder than over a flappy and slippery piece of meat. It's more akin to having a 7 feet long dick between your legs. It can't even really control it or use it as a practical extensible limb because it's tied and wrapped around his neck, so it's like having an extra arm but having it tied most of the time in this regard.

I don't know why it is so hard to admit for frogfags that the design would improve massively if it just kept the fucking bubbles.

greninja uses its tongue in the anime and games and has complete control over it.
I personally liked the bubble motif as well but they wanted a sleeker design and I think they nailed the tongue as a unique defining feature
