PMD is one of those games that is mediocre yet satisfying. It's a game series that has impacted my childhood and stirred my mind with wonder. The music, tone, theme, and setting to me are its strong points that solidify my investment in the series.
"Objectively" speaking, it's not a great game, but I don't think a piece of fiction has to be a well-crafted masterpiece to be appreciated. PMD has soul. It has its ways of stitching itself into memory.
Critics may have their points in whatever faults they find with the game, but why let the critics tell you what you should and shouldn't like. And it's not like there hasn't been some dissonance with critique and experience. The Phantom Menace is hated by most people, yet many critics praised the film. Trends can also influence how critics rate things. Desires to conform can subconsciously, or even consciously for not-so honest people, alter one's verdict on something.
