I'm playing a PMD game for the first time, and holy shit this is the first time I've ever been so invested into a Pokemon game. Good story, good music, good gameplay, it's just perfect. Why did I not play one earlier?

Not saying that mainstream Pokemon games are bad, but I have a hard time actually finishing them because I get bored of it. PMD is just so refreshing

God I love Pokemon, bros

That's the most well rounded one. The other games excel in other aspects but not necessarily in everything. I still like BRT, EoS and Super equally, however.

BRT is very similar to EoS, it just has less story.

Gates to Infinity is good in pretty much everything except the gameplay. Which means it's not good at all, actually. The story is good though, so you might want to play it for that.

Super is best played last because it has a lot of references to the previous games. The game is a bit like BW in that it's different from the other games, so go in with an open mind and accept that the gameplay isn't exactly the same. Story is also a bit different in the first half, second half is exactly what you'd expect after playing Explorers and Gates to Infinity (not actually a spoiler, but whatever)

Yeah, EoS might be everyone’s favorite, but Super is generally agreed to have the strongest gameplay.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, you can do multiple missions in a single run of the dungeon.

It's the same at its core, but they changed a lot of details, the new items change things significantly, missions work in a completely different way, you can't stop to grind before postgame (you can easily buy vitamins though) and the game is generally harder during the story, particularly if you're unfamiliar with it.

The world just feels more alive in these games. The NPCs do more than just stand around in one place blather on and give you tutorials, they have their own personality and daily routines. It’s why them forming and angry mob and chasing you out of the village was so impactful in the original, these guys used to be your friends.

I used to be in the "PMD is better than main series" camp for a while, but idk any more. I just couldn't be arsed to do the majority of endgame content in super when I got to it. The gameplay got old fast, especially when there wasn't any story to look forward to, and even then the story wasn't anything to write home about. Guess I just grew out of the games I suppose, cause I loved explorers of sky back when it was new.

I like the original R/BRT because I find it easier to get into two friend striking out on their own more than the shitiggly tuff guild. Grovyle and Dusknoir are the best characters in the series don't get me wrong, but I wish the start of EoS wasn't so slow. Fuck Chatot, fuck the retarded guildmaster and fuck the guild in general desu. The only member I don't want to strangle is Bidoof.

Also I just really love all the details in the original games, especially the friend areas. I'm quite sad those never came back.

Finally made it to the end of the post game story against Darkrai. It really is a nightmare given my team composition: grass type main, fire type partner in a two-part fire dungeon, and just one totter seed for the boss. Once I finally got the grunts cleared out, Darkrai just spammed Double Team, and combined with his Intimidator skill, meant I could hardly land a hit on him. Restocked on Revivers, Totters, Blinkers, and Violent Seeds for next time. Bag is already maxed before reentering the dungeon. A shame I have to cheese him out, but once the Double Team spam started, all bets were off. At least I have two Insomniscopes for me and my partner. I can’t babysit Cresselia enough.

Follow-up: Finished the story. Decided on stun seeds since it would leave the main boss stunned for a bit while the rest of us handled the grunts. Magcargo and Magmortar activated my partner’s Flash Fire twice and Intimidator wasn’t much of a pain this time around. Even found a Friend Bow in the dungeon.

Items are more important than in the previous games. Lots of important new items are introduced. Some of those items can't be brought outside of the dungeons you found them in.
Defeating Pokémon gives less experience and you might find yourself running away and not wanting to spend too much time on a floor. You can play like this, but Vitamins are very cheap and can be bought as soon as you can access their shop, so you can also do that as well.
Non-story missions aren't random and they're in a fixed amount. Completing them will give you access to some Pokémon. At first, you will have to do the missions the game wants you to do, but as connections expand, you will be able to do more missions. This means you get very strong Pokémon early on, as well as access to harder dungeons. To prevent you from constantly relying on the same Pokémon, the game prevents you from using them too often. The normal way of recruiting Pokémon doesn't exist in the game, and you get a Pokémon for every species (plus one for every gender difference).
The story is always pushing you forward, so you can't stop to grind. Story missions work like in the previous games, while non-story missions are similar to the postgame of the previous games: you can use any Pokémon you have access to and switch partners while inside the dungeon.

I love just how much PMD fans are into the games. They're so delightful to play through.
Wish the franchise got more going for it, like more animated specials or even its own series or something. At least there's fanfiction and fancomics to fill the void

Any EoS experts here know if evolution influences the appearance of related exclusive items in Croagunk's shop (ie If I evolve from a Turtwig to a Grotle, will I see less "Turtwig" items and more "Grotle" ones)? I'm missing a Turtwig item and don't want to lose out on a possible higher chance rate from evolving now, or from from evolving straight to Torterra and basically skipping the Grotle phase.

I kinda hope that the next PMD games have a bit less linearity to them. It'd be nice to have more player/partner mons to choose from that aren't just starters/mascots for once. Maybe also decisions throughout the story that the player can make that affect your relationships with certain other mons, as well as what dungeons you venture through during the story.

Could also have different ending scenarios depending on how you behaved throughout your story. I remember thinking about a PMD game scenario where a Malamar tries to convince the player that taking over the world by robbing Pokémon of their free will would bring everlasting peace across it. If the player agreed, they'd reluctantly ditch their friends and partner in order to make this vision a reality, with the Malamar replacing the partner for the rest of the story.

In that scenario's ending, the Malamar and the player nearly succeed with their goal before the final battle with the former partner and the other Pokémon that were once your friends that step in to stop you. If you win, the world becomes a "utopia" with you and Malamar ruling over an everlasting era of "peace". If you lose, your former partner and friends manage to open both your and the Malamar's eyes to how depressing and lifeless a world full of puppets would be, making you and the Malamar ultimately give up on bringing about the new ideal world.

It bothered me when I said I didn't think the partner was annoying the story kept going as if I had said yes. I liked the story itself, but my choice didn't matter at all there.

How many branching stories could there be, though?

I finished BRT awhile back but might make a new file. I did all the special episodes in Sky and finished the full storyline so now I’m just enjoying chill exploring of the new areas and prepping for evolutions.

Having those minor inconsequential choices peppered here and there wouldn't hurt anything, but I definitely think that certain potentially game-altering moments like when Miror B. asks if you want to join him in Gale of Darkness shouldn't be steamrolled by the illusion of choice.

I think having only 4 or 5 possible storylines deviating from the true one would be a decent number. The game resources to do it are there, it'd just be a matter of having multiple competent writers who could each make a separate storyline contained within the same world.
