That's not floating though, it's literally jumping. Steelix doesn't float, 3D animators just haven't figured out how to animate it without its spikes clipping through the ground.

You never see Steelix or Gyarados float in the anime, and that's because they can't float. They move like any other serpent on the ground.

the lightningrod ability isn't the point. Ground types are immune to electric attacks. Period. The anime came up with some bs that attacking the horn could bypass that, but when it happened again later, it nullified it as it should.

Steelix does both. As it is part Steel it can manipulate magnetic fields so it can fly/levitate (though if I remember not an ability it can have) but also be a land user as well as an underground traveller.

It would be fine to put them on the ground to be honest.
They could still use their special moves and could jump to use physical ones.
The only reason why GF went with the retarded "float in the air" thing for fish is because they want to show how they'd move in water, but are too lazy to add special underwater battles that could show fish in their natural environment, while logically making them follow the rules of physics (aka being on the ground) when battling out of water.

As usual, lore clashes with gameplay due to laziness.

I was definitely of the mind that Steelix couldn’t actually float, but I obviously was wrong and will admit it. I had to do that for Geodude. I remember when the games confirmed that Swift was literally star shaped energy blasts, I couldn’t believe it. I had argued vehemently over this before.

I still believe that fights with or against fish Pokémon take place near water, artificial or otherwise and the floating fish is a graphical convinience.

I guess it isn’t any more ludicrous any other stuff in the games, but until I see a fish Pokémon hovering outside of combat in a mainline game, I don’t think I need to concede this point yet. They have had a lot of Pokémon out in the overworld with NPCs, but they’ve avoided fish.

There are no floating Steelix anywhere except the games. Floating is not mentioned in any of the its Pokedex entries.

Until a Pokedex entry says it can float, or it's shown floating in the anime, floating Steelix is officially non-canon.
