They were great. People let the cutscenes ruin the whole game for them. That only inconvenienced me on follow-up playthroughs but the games were still fantastic.

Nope. Gen 6 has:
>better region (Alola is the most barebones region yet)
>better gimmick (Z-Moves are just more fucking cutscenes)
>roller skating
and actually introduced good staples for the series such as:
>trainer customisation (something SM dropped the ball on)
>PSS (LMAO at the shitty join avenue clone)
>Amie (SM removed the minigames because fuck you)
The few unique things SM actually did weren't actually that great.
>PokeRide makes it feel like even more of a guided tour (Sword and Shield replace this with something better)
>the Trials are just watered down gyms
>Ultra Beasts are literally just legendaries and have nothing unique about them outside of design and lore

XY were pretty fucking shit, but SM managed to somehow make THAT look good.
All of this is completely beside the godawful cutscenes and shitty forced story.

They were okay for one playthrough but that was about it, and most of the battles were piss easy. I liked the battle tree and the new pokemon were 100x better than the pokemon in gen 6.

Had they ramped up the difficulty and made the first bit not feel like such a long tutorial they could have been B tier or higher.

Same here, the characters were great, the region being a tropical island chain was a nice breath of fresh air, and even if they weren't executed perfectly I liked the idea behind the Totem Pokemon battles a lot. The characters were also really charming and honestly? The cutscenes aren't that bad, the people complaining about them have the attention spans of spastic chimpanzees.

I do wish they did more with the Alola forms, though. It was a cool way to make old Pokemon feel fresh and I loved the designs, and thought it was a waste that they were only given to a handful of KANTOOOOOO Pokemon and weren't expanded upon in Ultra S&M.

You know what's fucked? Masuda boasted that he had 500 people working on XY at one point. Ohmori, on the other hand, spent the last few months of SM development working on it completely alone with tools he wasn't familiar with because his entire team got poached to "work on something" for the Switch dev kit.
So basically, SM got shafted probably in favor of Town.

The Gen 6 games' issues, well, X/Y's anyway, was that they held back shit that should have been there in the first place for a supposed third version that didn't happen. Gen 7's issues were that they took the good parts from six and scrapped those while making the bad parts of it and making it worse. And then Masuda pulls the 100 people into LGPE and somehow manages to make it more presentable than what we've seen so far with SS relatively speaking, because LGPE is far from quality.
