Depends on how it is done. Do I have any say in what pokemon they have? Or will there be multiple companions to choose from who each have different kinds of pokemon?

Make double battles with them toggleable, and let me have mild control over what they can use as well as their AI to an extent. So for instance I can have them focus on supporting my Pokemon, attacking the foe with a type disadvantage, not attacking the same target as me, etc. Oh, also so they don't attack wild shinies.

AI sucks so it has the potential to be a scrappy mechanic but aside from that it has potential. Maybe not as a main thing, but as a hefty side quest.

>can go out of your way to find some top tier partner teammates

Honestly this gimmick sounds like a fine premise for a non-linear pokemon game the fans have been memeing about recently

As a kid, when I went back from Silver to play Yellow and found out Pikachu would follow you, I always liked the idea of being able to have a companion trainer, and DP doing that, even if it was uncontrollable, was always neat to me. It'd be a pretty cool gimmick, could even be used as a way to have co-op during the main story (but not be totally one-sided like in LGPE, with a double battle in the favor of the player(s)).
While I would also like having following mons, I'd have to guess that having a trainer following you, or a Pokemon following you, would have to be interchangeable or something like that and not both at once. Either way though, I like the ideas posted ITT too.

You should be able to decide at the beginning of the game whether you want to play through in doubles mode or singles mode.
In doubles mode, you have a partner who's always with you. Probably the friendly rival.
Sometimes, you might get separated and have to fight alone, or even fight alongside a different person.
You could even decide whether to furnish your partner with Pokemon, or just have them get their own.

I'd really like a spin-off game with a party feature. I've really given a lot of thought to it. You get to choose from 18 recruitable type experts from around the world, plus a few well rounded characters. They have a set party when you meet them but would be able to capture specific Pokemon on certain routes by ordering the party to "hunt for Pokemon". The player is allowed to gift or trade them Pokemon of their set preference too. Each one also would have a reward Pokemon that you can trade for once you reach max-friendship with the trainer. Three characters in your party at a time, but as a trade off the region has a 3 Pokemon party limit. In towns you can manage everyones party through the box system though. Enemy Pokemon that belong to trainers would also have higher stats and health then the party. It just always seemed like it would be fun.
