It isn't though. Have you not seen the region and level """""design"""""? No dungeons, and routes just a bunch of short corridors.
Alola literally cannot stand on its own. The games were unfortunately designed with story being a huge focus and it fucking shows.

Route design still sucks, which is a shame because the game heavily encourages you to constantly move forward due to the lack of anything to come back too when you receive more PokeRides/Pokemon/Z-Crystals.

Alola has actual bosses, Johto hardly has any hurdles and the level design is as bad so it would be faster to clear.
