The only ones where you might be caught off guard are the first battle west of viridian city and the SS anne battle. Shitty memes created this Mandela effect where people think that Blue was a highly competent, asshole rival who practically always ambushed you when everyone was at 1 HP. He is not even really mean, more like a pushy and aggressive friend. Maybe people confused him with Gary from the anime, but even there he appeared like 2 times and then jobbed like a bitch at the league, then became a pussy.

What's wrong with your rival healing your Pokemon other than it making the game a bit easier? If I'm going to test my myself against my rival I'm sure going to want to level the field as much as possible.
