They did what they wanted to and dipped because the anime is a marketing tool. They left the future to the fandom's heads, but also straight up confirmed the implications. I see nothing wrong with that decision versus the alternative. It's a miracle it happened at all, but the truly great thing is what it opens up for anyones' headcanon. I see less people who even know who Drew is, so at the very least it got the audience more invested than whatever subplot May had.
