Even if the only Gen 5 game you played was Black (which focused more on rotations) you should have run into a couple triple battles during the story.

Too much to think about. The notion of three actions in one turn provides too many different possibilities to reasonably plan for them all and thus to predict your opponent. Add in the positioning mechanic where moves like heat wave can hit two or three pokemon depending on the users location and it becomes confusing for the average player.

You're thinking of BW2 both of which had random triple and rotation battles on some of the Generic trainers. (Usually the ones out off the main path.)

In BW the new battle formats were supposed to be kinda like "version-exclusives".
Black had only one trainer that did Triple Battles, and half a dozen other trainers that did Rotation Battles.
In White it was the opposite, only one trainer did Rotation Battles, and the others did Triple Battles instead.

BW2 dropped the gimmick and distributed them evenly across both games, plus adding the two battle formats to PWT.

triple battles aren't nearly as fun as I'd have thought given how much I like doubles
rotation battles are kinda weird, but I haven't played enough to really give a proper opinion on them
