I'm not most people, but imo what held Alola back was the lack of surfing routes between islands sprinkled with mini islands and other points of interest. The region just felt so disconnected and smaller than it actually was.

The thing I couldn't get over was the handholding mini-map you were forced to have open at all times. It's like they couldn't expect you to figure out where to go next so they tell you at EVERY instance.
Other than that, the trials were a nice shake up to gyms, the new mons were fantastic, that bean place was interesting, and taking pictures with Rotom was pretty relaxing.

This combined with the fact that the majority of locations looked identical. It's to be expected based on pacific islands, but they could have done more to make each town/island feel unique. Instead of a tiny portion of a snowy area, there could have been an entire snowy town/island, etc.

I can understand that travelling and dungeons may seem dull and uninteresting but the vastness and variety of places you visit make up for it. I'm also glad they kept Surfing to a minimum and no more shitty slippery ice dungeons. I accept I am biased since what matters for me in Boggémon is 40% combat, 40% Pokédex 20% travelling

I thought you had to go to resolution cave for Guzzlord. Though technically the UB quests or optional so you're right. I don't remember what Sandy Cave is at all. Maybe the issue isn't so much the lack of areas, but how linear the routes surrounding them are, or that said areas are usually small.
I cannot pinpoint why exactly kalos and alola feel hollow, but they do to me. I guess there was more a sense of scale in 2D.

Good point about the soundtrack, I hadn't thought of that, but it's true.

I think that's Alola's problem generally. It's like a pleasant theme park rather than a wild adventure. Not only is it practically a straight line but it's also full of roads with a few patches of grass. You never feel like there's any danger, it's just so pedestrian all the time. Curse them for not making the volcano an actual cave.

Because it’s incredibly small. Wide open, 3d areas give the illusion of emptiness as well. The region is an accessory to the story rather than the other way around and it suffers as a result. Like most of the areas are typical for Pokémon but there’s less of them. I feel like if you stripped out the story it’d be the smallest region in the series, right next to GSC Johto.

yep. gen 3's complaints were its lack of transfers from the previous generation (sound familiar?), excess water routes, and ridiculous evil teams. Gen 4 was shit on for its HM overuse, "ugly" crossgen evos, and engine slowness. Of course, when Gen 5/6 and the games became eligible for remakes, these comments drifted away and the games become the most beloved. There's no reason to believe that this pattern won't continue.

Yeah. For the record, most of gen 7’s map is pretty similar to what’s been presented before. It’s just smaller. The story focus has also been done before, but it’s more of the main attraction this time around.

The gameplay time seems similar because it’s padded with story. A lot of time is taken up by those animations, dialogue boxes, and fade-to-black screen changes.

They are though. There are more puzzles and reasons to backtrack to places to get hidden loot and such. The routes had obstacles to navigate around instead of being some hallway or curve with a bit of grass to the side. The legendaries had dedicated dungeons with multiple floors etc.

Well yeah, anon. It's pretty fair.
And i'll be honest, something i really like during my Pokemon playthroughs is simply to find rare mons as soon as they are available. (yes, including things horrendously annoying to catch like Munchlax and Feebas in DPPt) It makes me feel way more attached to them. So seeing some of them like Larvesta with a 1% encounter rate makes me really happy inside.

I agree. The routes and side areas were actually quite good, moreso in B2W2. I like the castelia sewer complex which leads to hidden alleyways in Castelia, and also links to Relic passage and has a scientist lab in it.
