Does gamefreak:
-Work harder and put more effort into the games (at least include national dex)
-End mainline "high" budget entries and double down on Let's Go/lootboxes/gatchashit
-Get forcibly removed from the pokemon series

Which is still low, not when being compared to other pokemon games though. The first console main pokemon game would sell 20-25m under normal conditions, but they made LGPE and then this. It wil sell more than LGPE, probably 15m or a bit more.

Uh, bullshit. If Sword and Shield sell 15,000,000 in Q4 this year, that will be a smashing success, especially considering the installed base of the Switch and its price vs. the handheld games.

Culturally, Japan doesn't like admitting fault, or that something they made is anything less than perfect.
You and I both know that the games will absolutely NOT bomb, though. TPC could literally sell a literal pile of horse manure, sprinkle some dirt on it and call it "Mudbray Manure" and it would sell reasonably well.

I don't think it will outsell the 3ds games simply due to the price tag now, kids parents would have to pay 120 to get both versions. its possible but highly unlikey

Sixteen million in years to match, yes. Not in 1.5 months (November 15 - December 31).

Still feels odd to compare the sales of Switch games with games on the 3DS though; I'm pretty sure the Switch hasn't sold anywhere near as much as the 3DS.

Nintendo consoles usually sell more software per hardware sold than the handhelds. Usually in the range of 1.5x to 2x.

So the Switch doesn't necessarily need to reach 70 million before a Pokemon game could outsell the 3DS games.

SwSh would need an absurdly high attach rate to outsell the 3DS Pokemon games. That being said, LGPE creates a general baseline for how well SwSh should sell, I don't think Game Freak would consider it a disappointment unless it somehow sold less than LGPE, which seems incredibly unlikely at this point. No matter what happens Game Freak would almost never have their baby taken away from them. Nintendo more than likely owns most of Pokemon but not all of it, but even if they did it would be absurdly disrespectful to kick the company that created the series off of it. It would never happen in a modern business setting unless Nintendo was feeling particularly devious. There's nothing stopping them from asserting more power over Game Freak and making changes to their methodology, but cutting them out of the picture entirely is not gonna happen. If I had to guess Nintendo lets Game Freak do what they want, but they could easily have a more involved presence if they really wanted to.

XY sold as much as DP and BW and it was the first game on new hardware. Similarly, DP sold as much as RS on new hardware. SwSh needs to sell ~16m to barely keep the franchise in the same stable/stagnated state it has been for the past 15 years.
