I would always go west. It wasn't until hgss that I realized you were supposed to fight Pryce first

You weren't "supposed" to make one of the choices over the other. The idea is that the game has some nonlinearity in it.

Not sure. My usual route is Goldenrod City -> Ecruteak City. Goldenrod has the supplies I need and the train station.

Always west, especially in HGSS. The remakes give you the option to train newly caught Safari Pokemon near Lake of Rage.

I always make my way to Cyanwood first, and get my ass kicked by that fighting gym. I always forget their like 10 levels stronger than me at that point. Then I grind for about 5 minutes before remembering "oh shit, nah, I need to get back on track here"

West until I hit the shores near Olivine come back and get Surf and then head east, clearing everything that can be there and then coming back to head past Olivine.

The other way around is probably slightly quicker but it feels better to my inner completionist to do it that way.

if all you ever use is bayleef, shouldn't it be a meganium already before beating Whitney?

There is no "supposed to."
It's one of two paths, and you can do it in either order.
It all converges once you get the seventh badge.

I mix it up. As a kid I'd go west, because I thought I was "supposed" to go that way. I like going lake of rage now to get the gyrados so I can use it as an hm slave.

Fly is to the west, so if you went east first there is some backtracking. At least both routes have multiple ways of traversing them (through Mt. Morter or across the lake outside for one route, either the lefthand path or righthand path for the other), so you can mitigate the backtracking feel of it. Almost makes me think they designed it like that specifically for people who went east first, knowing they would have to walk back to Mahogany and ultimately Ecruteak from Lake of Rage.
