real butterflies or moths dont have mandibles. butterfree has mandibles because mothra has mandibles.
then there's the large compound eyes and antennae which mothra and butterfree have but venomoth lacks. the caterpie line is also the one associated with shooting silk which is also a mothra's signature power.

Its a weird design for sure, with its own fanbase, but just because the weitd metal thing fights a dinosaur doesn't mean its supposed to evoke mechagodzilla. I would even go as far as saying tyranitar doesn't evoke godzilla that much, but the inspiration MIGHT be there (green spiky dinosaur, which is a very broad concept).

Forcing pop culture into everything isn't very genuine and i think it should be appreciated for what it is.

Mothra's wings are clearly rounder, which butterflies tend to have. Moths have mostly sharper or swept-back wings. Butterfree was obviously based on Mothra's design.

The art director of the new mothra just wanted it to look edgy and dangerous, while disregarding its iconic wings for "godzilla eyes". Its a bad design in favour of something "sleek, cool and dangerous".

Mothra can have arms while keeping her design similar. I have no idea why they changed her so much. I still think she's really cool honestly, but it doesn't evoke the original very much, if they called it battra it would've made a lot more sense.

The director himself said they needed her to be more like a praying mantis with more "blades, sharp pieces and stingers", so you're definitely wrong there.

Plausible deduction is that it's inspired by the black veined white butterfly, as well as a monarch for its previous forms (including the cocoon form).

All butterflies have powdery wings and most use a fabric stringy like substance to create a cocoon.

Its not based on mothra, even as someone who loves mothra, you have to admit its based more on nature.
