Better to start with those gens than starting with Gen 3 which was trash outside of Firered and Leafgreen.

If you missed the boat from 97-00 the next best thing is Gen 4 and 5.

Gen 1 and 2 suffered from the HM effect. But Pokeys back then were still fresh and new so we tend to favor them over the new shit.

my life feels like an odd loop
while pokemon, which has always been my escape and i'm sure that counts for many of us, feels a lot like is slowly deteriorating, and rely too much on battle-gimmicks rather than exploration and adventure.

I will say, filling up a good roster of teams and battling online has been the main reason i've reached 999hrs playtime in some games, but that was before the gimmicks began, it's refreshing, but shouldn't be the headline of the games.

I think it's fair to say that the games took a more casual approach in recent years. Rather then adding new areas, they add stuff like petting Pokemon/ character customization.
