well my reasoning was that normally it’s harder to freeze water than melt ice, but in hail the surrounding area is cooler so it becomes easier to freeze water, ergo ice becomes harder to melt from it or something

This is such a boring solution, ice types are clearly thematically meant to be frail like steel types are meant to be defensive, the problem is GF are retards as always.
Imagine a world where steel types pre fairy type were all fast sweepers with low defenses but they're only SE against two shitty types, that's preety much where ice types are right now.
If you wanna make defensive ice types good you need to add stuff to their kit, nobody will use avalugg just because now it resists three more types.
Give them some kind of boost under hail, give them some utility moves that only ice types learn or just make fast ice sweepers, then you have a thematically unique type with good mons.

Read my post again I didn't say that you can't make defensive ice types it's that giving it resistences won't give the defensive ice types we have any reasson to be picked.
Give hail a boost, like SE moves are less powerfull in hail, give ice types some kind of exclusive utility move for defensive pokes, like a screen that makes it so attacks can't do over 50% damage, or a move that makes it so the enemy can't stay in for 3 turns without freezing.

I just think it's boring and it's like seeing SE types as elements in an rpg and less like types for species of creatures.
Rock moves being inaaccurate is a shitty thing for them but it adds to the flavor.
I've always found the trio of Ice having no weaknesses, rock having a few and steel having the most, all this tying into the theme of rock is harder than ice and steel is harder than both to be really cool and a pseudo type trio like the starter types.
Giving avalugg recovery is something that will help it so much more than any resistance could, giving it some move that you can build an unique defensive core around will make it much better than any couple of resists.
Homogenising types is just such a boring way to"balance", game freak is just too lazy and incompetent to revamp old mons that didn't get treated right.

How badly would removing ice effect the games?
It's just feels redundant to water.

I just got out of work to see this thread and I was looking through to see if anyone suggested it before I did. Ice should resist normal because unless it's a thin sheet, no average fuckhead can just break it. It shouldn't resist fighting though.

Yeah avalugg has so much trouble switching into things
The problem is that he can't do shit back, you can just switch and avalugg is dead weight.
Give avalugg an ice type pursuit and you have yourself a lando and garchomp (and many more) counter, it has a good niche, it will be used
Give cryagonal a protect that switches the mon out after using it, it now is a very valuable pivot for offensive teams
You'll just make terrible walls into mediocre walls by adding resistances

And yes i know how to use it, Avalugg already has it's use in OU stall, so why are you even asking to buff it? god forbids it can do more than one thing (and the one thing it does he's absolutely mediocre at) hence why it's PU along with unevolved mons.

The funny thing is type effectiveness isn’t close to the biggest of the ice type’s problems. It’s issues come from stats and abilities. Moves are alright, other than most ice types having sub par coverage moves. We need ice types with good bst and good stat distribution, a decent to good ability, and type coverage.
