Okay, /vp/, let's play a game. Let's say Masuda has had enough of getting bullied by fans and hands you the keys to the castle, and you're allowed to be the lead producer on Gen 9. You can make it take place anywhere you want, and include 3 returning features from prior Pokemon games, and you can make any balance changes you so desire.

The catch? You're only allowed to include 450 Pokemon from previous Pokemon games, and you have to make it well received by fans. How do you do it?

For me, I'd make it take place on Pokemon Alpha Centauri B. Make a bunch of otherwordly, scenic routes, cities are colonies built in the architectural styles of different Earth cultures (IE one is a Heian-era Japanese city, one is Renaissance Venice, one is Babylonian inspired), and justify the dex cut by saying the Pokemon that didn't make it couldn't handle the transit to the new world.

Then I turn Pokemon Home into a stadium/revolution clone. All the battle facilities make a return, you earn BP to buy TM/TR/Move Tutor/Items. There's gym towers, champion towers, online battles, and double bp weekends. Multi battle tower can now be played with friends. Normies will subscribe because they need that box to transfer, and competitive fags will use it for the moves and the best place for online battling on console.

No gym leaders, the Elite 4 is a tournament but way bigger, with everyone you met in your journey entering. It's RNG to decide who you face.
You can enter the tournament without having done the quests, but it's a similar situation as doing Calamity Ganon without doing all 4 Divine Beasts: It's waaaaay harder to do.
There's a ton of postgame, including a full-scale Battle Frontier, PWT, VS Seeker for Rematches, etc.

A gen with no new pokemon, instead the entire dex is regional forms of old pokemon or something. Focus mainly on making the games more enjoyable on a base level instead of focusing on gimmicks that will be forgotten in the next generation.

Yeah it's a big shame for them, doing a project like this, but they were brave in biting off more than small indie teams can usually handle and with all the stunning models and stuff they've made for this game, you can tell they've been working overtime and putting in tons of effort.

*the 3 features that return are three battle frontiers, so that's 7x3=21 battle facilities in total

The region takes place in some sort of alternate Antarctica.
Returning features are Battle Frontier, second region and Contests.
Balance change is Hail now deals type based damage with ice types still immune to it.

California isn't even that nice of a state. All the big cities look the same, there are much better mountainous states, even ones with beaches. If you wanted a wide variety with nice geography, any Appalachian state with a coastline would do. Alaska, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Michigan, and Washington would also be cool, too.

I dont know if they would be comfortable with such an obviously political theme though, especially if hong kong situation were still a thing during development. China would give a thumbs down and coerce them into dropping it

Easy.
You start in Kanto, after that you go to Johto. You fight an underground version of Team Rocket. They're not as loud and pronounced as they used to be, but you still end up getting involved. Your rival is friendly enough at first but ends up joining them later in order to use their resources as he gets sick and tired of losing to you. After you beat the Kanto and Johto gyms and wipe Rocket out, you fight the Indigo Plateau with new champions and all new members besides Koga.
Once that's done, you explore Sinnoh. This is the post game. You beat the Sinnoh gyms, stumble onto legends, all that. But it's all very exploration oriented, you aren't told where to go too often as the whole Sinnoh section is just you exploring and training just because.
There's also a new Battle Frontier in the old Survival Area, with PWT being one of the parts of it.
I wouldn't mess with any Pokemon. All of Kanto, Johto, and a bit of Hoenn/Sinnoh and Unova mons are in. I don't care about meta.

>Make NPCs interact with the environment (even if just in superficial animations) so they aren't just standing around waiting for the player
>Give the player character expressions
>Give the player HP, too - Some wild Pokemon or evil trainers will attack the player trainer to attempt an easier win
>Starters are a grass rhino, fire rat, and water shrimp
>Promise to support game with patches to include the rest of the national dex over the course of a few years
>Bring back berry pots

all it takes is honesty and actual reasoning, this entire thing is a shitshow due to gamefreak acting like yet another faceless corporation and betraying their fanbase's trust
