Pokemon Pyrite (a Crystal ROM hack) is my favorite ROM hack that I've ever played. It's probably not everyone's cup of tea cause of how grindy it can be at times, but I wish more ROM hacks were like it. Basically it left the Pokemon and typings alone (except for encounters and some learnsets) and then made the game genuinely difficult by giving trainers better AI, stronger teams and movesets, disallowed the use of items in battle, etc. It really captured the soul of Crystal but made it fun to play as an adult.
