Reasons why SWSH is so short

- Routes are very linear, so less time is spent exploring. The "long" exploration will be in the Wild Area, but it's still fast to explore because...
- No random encounter, therefore far less battles than before as battles are easy to avoid.
- No random encounter also means you go through caves FAR faster than caves in previous games.
- Because there are no random encounters, you'll seldom have to go back to town and heal before giving a route/cave a second try.
- EXP Share means that you don't need to fight as many battles anyway, as each battle essentially gives six time the Exp as previous games would.
- Caves don't have multiple floors like previous games. No huge cave to go through like Cerulean Cave, Whirl Islands, Mt. Indigo or Terminus Cave.
- Nothing like the Pokémon Tower, Sprout Tower or Mt. Pyre.
- Less routes than previous games.
- Less cities than previous games. Aside from the starting town (Technically two, but it might as well be one) and the final city (which houses the League), every single town in the game houses a gym. One of the "town" is even just a Pokécenter and a gym.
- Previous games would often interrupt your journey to have you deal with the Team's shenanigans (Ex: Dealing with the Team Rocket Hideout, fighting the Team Rocket in the Silph Co. building, fighting Team Magma/Aqua at Mt. Chimney, etc.) This usually happens multiple times per games. This doesn't really happen with Team Yell, as you only fight Yell while going through routes anyway, which isn't any different than trainers you couldn't avoid in previous games, and in one of the Gym Mission which isn't any different than fighting gym trainers in previous games. The only time you really have to deal with a Team is near the end of the game with Macros Cosmos. However, there is no dungeon to explore and only 7 battles (boss included), making it much shorter than in previous games.
