Is everyone SUPPOSED to have a starter Pokemon on their team?

I know it doesn't actually matter, but it's bothering me because I'm autistic and I like to fantasize. Would we all get starters in real life? Is it standard to keep yours forever? Most of the Pokemon trainers that exist do not have a starter, which leads me to believe no. But, everyone important has one so I don't know. What do you guys think?

There are standard starter Pokémon given out to people starting their adventure, which is the one we’re given. Although other people might obtain a different Pokémon as their “starter”, either due to their local culture(eg dragon village person getting a dragon) or because they befriend some shitter nearby(like someone befriending trubbish or ratata).

Yes, kinda. It can be assumed getting Pokémon from a professor is rare, as most NPCs have pokemon that are local, like with Peeko or Hop’s first Pokémon, wooloo.

My guess is that people pick up whatever and keep it for its lifespan, wether it’s for battling or a house pet.

They generally tend to be strong enough to justify a team slot so you likely won't be any worse off keeping them on. Only one I boxed was Snivy in B2 because I wanted a Lilligant and didn't want two grass mons.

Generally the region's starter Pokémon are what you get but there's exceptions. Like for example Nanu gave out Meowth instead of Alola's starters.

I generally do like starters, the only gens where I dislike all three of them are 4 and 8.

But, I didn't mean for in-game, I meant in your own personal headcanon for what your/my ultimate team would be. Six of your absolute favorites, combined in the best combination you can think of. Mine would be pic related without starters, but I don't know if I would have an Emboar or a Blastoise irl. Emboar because I live quite close to New York geographically so it makes sense I would be offered Unova starters. When the gen V games came out, me and my friend at the time went to the pokemon store in NYC and she got me a Tepig plush. Or it would be Blastoise since I started Pokemon with Blue version back in the day and I have always liked Blastoise. I don't know if my "real life" starter would be based on my age range, or my geographical location.

I know this is pretty autistic, but, considering where we are, I'm hoping you guys get it. It's fun to think about.

Where do most starters come from anyway? In game they are almost never encountered in the wilderness so how come the professors and company always have one of each to give to complete newbies.

In a completely realistic Pokémon world, most people would not have hundreds of Pokémon. Most people wouldn't even have 6 Pokémon. There would be an enormous financial burden for taking care of 6 living creatures in addition to yourself. In a world that would be fucked up enough as to allow "Pokémon Trainer" to be an actual profession, young female Trainers would be rare because of the very real danger of child abduction and molestation/rape. Everyone would be shitting in the grass. There would be countless abandoned or abused Pokémon. But the only reason this world would exist because it would be 1984 style where the government is the Pokémon League (functioning more like TPC with political power) and there would be constant propaganda. All those NPCs who just go on about how they love Pokémon would be real. You'd get Red as Big Brother, some legendary unknowable Trainer that the government is always telling everyone about who was the first Pokémon Master and all the kids look up to him. Any societal flaws would be completely brushed under the rug, and the public would be trained to ignore all dissent and turn on those who don't drink the Kool-Aid.

Actually, it's pretty close to what the franchise is like now, just without the political power.

Define starter. We see Walley get Ralts in RSE as his first pokemon. We also meet other trainers with the game's respective grass, water, and fire starters. The original idea was that the three Kanto starters were Oak's last Pokemon and he gave them out to you and your rival.

You'd probably get a first Pokemon from family, like a lilpup or Purloin, and if you train it, you could go out and catch something stronger, eventually. I'd still want Bulbasaur, my first ever starter, or even Dratini which was my first Pokemon card.

In any case, it's way more likely that "starter pokemon" are typically pokemon that are mildly easy to train and are decently strong. Starters always evolve twice and are typically somewhat easy to manage and have decent temperaments. Compare that to something like..Caterpie who also evolves twice and has a nice temperament and is likely easy to raise, but isn't very strong. Then there are Pokemon like, for example, Gibble line. Two evolution, VERY strong but hard to raise (slow level speed) and has some nasty temperament issues.

It's highly likely that starter Pokemon are given to trainers who want to take on the gym challenges and wants to BE a pokemon TRAINER not just someone who has pokemon and battles them for fun. Think of the difference between NPCs like Youngster Joey and Cool Trainer (male) Chad. Joey has a rattata and hangs out near his hometown and Chad hangs out in a fucking cave and has 5 pokemon and none of them are route 1-5 "shit mon" and Chad has been doing the Gym challenge.

Essentially, starter pokemon probably most likely involve more than just the "canon 23" lines, but in general starters are given to promising kids who want to focus on battling and raising pokemon.

For what it's worth, I personally wouldn't like to be a "professional trainer" but would absolutely hunt down and catch a Bulbasaur because it's my favorite.

No, every game from gen 1-8 implies the mc trainer is a rarity in having a starter. Several generations you get it by virtue being friends with a relative who gives out the starter. Other generations you get it due to being familiar with the Professor. Only two generations do you get it out the blue.

Gen2
>no specific connections, gives you a pokemon
Gen 3
>rescues Professor from pokemon attack but would have probably gotten a starter anyway because their father is a gym leader
Gen 4
>had to use the Professor starters to defend oneself from wild pokemon, Professor later on let's them keep it

>no specific connections, gives you a pokemon
Gen 6
>gets group of kids to help him with research but implies that he is familiar with all the kids parents

as OP, honestly this is a good thing, because I don't know how the fuck I would have such a well rounded team with so much type coverage if I included Blastoise/Emboar into the team I posted. Plus, Pyukumuku would mean I have to run two mono-waters.

My autistic headcanon works perfectly then, since I wouldn't have either of those starters in real life anyways. Based. I guess I'd be one of those random youngster loser kids who catches a Seedot to start out.

Not everyone has a starter because not everyone decides to take a Pokédex or become a trainer. Some people have Pokémon, but they certainly don't train or battle. I mean, in a world where you can find the item to catch a monster pretty easily or can hatch one or can ask for one from someone else, I imagine there is a lot of people with Pokémon but being a trainer means that you've decided to go through the rounds of doing something beneficial for the professors or league in a home region.

i dont feel like i need to fill all 6 slots and for some reason would prefer not to. would rather keep it at 2 mons or 4 mons so none of them are alone (it might sound gross but it would be cruel to keep them from marrying) again not trying to be gross but male sandslash/female mawile theyre married. I think it makes more sense to assume I would have an Emboar as well. Of course I got Blastoise first, but that's just because that's just what happened to be out at the time. If we actually did live in that Universe, I always would have lived in Unova.

Honestly, as boring as it is I may have ended up with an Emboar AND a Blastoise on my irl team. I've got a connection to both and a significant real life even where I was given both (in plushie form). When I was a young boy in the 90s I won first prize at some game at an amusement park and I won a giant blastoise plush that I still have to this day. That easily could have been me winning a squirtle.

Yup, he sends you to do his busy work and in trade you get a starter. But there was no specific ties you had with him that gave you clout like in gen 1, 7, 8 and possibly 3. So you were extremely fortunate he didn't have one of his associates do the job or give you a Sentret to go with you instead.

So nah I'd say if there are starters they are just random pokemon handed to people to start their journey. This is why you don't see a whole bunch of squirtles and fennekins on other trainers teams

All trainers have a starter (as in a first pokemon), but not everyone has a Starter (as in one of the special species given to you by a Professor.) Starters are supposed to be uncommon, and are probably chosen because those particular species are good with kids, hardy, and easy to train. They're probably super uncommon in the wild because they've been domesticated for so long, so you probably have to get them through a breeder, which is why Professors can get them.

Other people who don't have connections get whatever is local or form a connection with a special Pokemon they find. Wally's starter is his Ralts even though it's not a Starter.

A real question though is that if somebody gets a first Pokemon as a companion or pet but isn't a trainer, is that their "starter?" I would say that a starter is more of a trainer term for your first Pokemon, so if you don't actually have a trainer career you don't have a "starter."

Apparently Pokemon don't need much sustenance and just eat Berries. Berries are less fruit and more weird alien food we have no context for. Additionally, most Pokemon spend most of their time as energy in stasis so they don't need food all the time

Most Pokemon trainers as kids seem to be doing something akin to summer camp.

Not in Gen 2, at absolute best you are a literal who trying to get badges, that puts the former shell that is Team Rocket out of their desperate misery. Who would have ultimately met their end anyway by either Silver or Lance if you weren't around. Then you beat the Johto league go through Kanto, then meet and challenge Red on a desolate mountain with no one to witness your victory against him. No one really is aware how strong gen 2's protagonist is outside the league victory.

Only two starters I still care about are my swampurt from original saphire cause it's my oldest mon and my decidueyes from s/m n ultra s/m. The owl boys only because having a ghost starter final evo was cool and ghost kind of wrecked in those games

Elm gives you a pokemon to do a job for him.And he does work the MC for a bit not only for the delivery part but hatching togepi as well. Starters dont seem that rare in gen II though, several trainers got the kanto ones, even random people like that trainer girl have a bulbasaur, trainers above goldenrod got squirtle and pikachu, a dude got three (!) charmanders in different evolution stages, etcetera. Now that i think about it gen 1 and 2 were less strict about who had starters around

The ones you get are just random ones the professor in your town gives you as a favour. You just got lucky in each game and didn’t have to catch a shitmon like Rattata as your first Pokémon, you got given a rare one because you happened to be on good terms with the local professor. ‘Starter’ Pokémon are t actually an in-universe thing in the games.

Considering its always the same three stage pokemon with water/fire/grass typing at least partially they pretty much are a thing yes. Dont black and white even say that much with that first gym with the waiters and the monkeys?

I assume you have to sign up for some program. but you don't need a starter pokemon, the other trainers in the game don't have them most of the time. even ash just got a random pikachu because he was late.
