To be fair, the SM anime did this to a lot the Pokemon too. I really didn't like Meltan initially, but the anime made it really endearing and expressive in a way the games never could.

I'm personally excited to see how they'll animate Polteageist, the Dreepy line, Clobbopus and Eiscue.

Man I actually loved the design of both Nickit and Thievul and I had one on my team up until the Fairy Gym. Thievul just suffers so much from early route shitmon syndrome that I couldn't justify keeping him on my team until the end. Every Pokemon, even ones at type disadvantage, were taking it down in like 2 hits. Fuck Gamefreak for screwing over one of their best designs so hard.

I kept a thievul on my team 'till the very end. Find a dark pulse TR, it makes a world of difference. It's nothing compared to the unkillable centiskorch, but it's a pretty solid pokemon for an in-game run, especially with nasty plot and a couple coverage moves.
Then again, for my second run, I kept a dreepy from level 22 on, so maybe I just have a high tolerance for suffering.

I only agree with SM and the first few seasons. Starting from Gen 3 (But not counting the films) the animation and character designs are just so stiff and dreadful. Pokemon saying their names also renders it unwatchable for me.

OS, SM and PM are filled to the brim with true soul. AG still had shades of soul, but it was lost in DP, BW and XY. Not to say DP and XY are bad, they just don’t capture the soul of Pokemon properly IMO.
