They're fairly similar overall. They both introduced overhauls to the battle system, had a large focus on exploration, and had a definitive remake of an earlier game.

Arguing over which is better is just splitting hairs though, as compared to the first 5 gens and the latest 3, there's such a drop off that any differences are negligable

umm, guys?? aksually generation cinq is the last innovative region, because it gave us handholding, forced legendary captures, shitty cutscenes, a """story"""", ugly ass sprites, worst pokedex in the franchise, a circle as a map, the legendary innovation that is pokestar studio, legendaries before the first gym, daycare and fishing rod locked behind postgame.. This. The closest thing to innovation the main series has had is RS but that's only because the game was put on a whole new engine and everything was completely overhauled and even then it wasn't worth it since they got rid of a bunch of features along with it.

Day/Night cycles which didn't return until gen 4, but I think that's really about it. A 2nd region included in the games was a mere afterthought, and beyond that all gen 3 did was add onto the formula.

Innovation is overrated. Pokémon doesn't need that. It needs more ambition and more polish instead. The formula is perfect the way it is but the execution is so poor and barebones. Some people are really a cancer to some franchises, crying for innovation and trying to fix what isn't broken, and the only result is ever like Sonic games that make shitty alterations in the name of innovation instead of playing to its strengths.

You realize that's not all of Hoenn, right, zoomer?
It's showing that the daycare, which you access very early on, is in a perfect spot such that the game loops you back to it several times, and unlocks a new area for you each time. It's easy to access key locations organically because the world design cycles back on itself.
