Get the grass or fire starter, there's a bug type pokemon you get later in the game with gale wings and acrobatics so basically pre nerfed talonflame, and get nucleon as it's pretty op.

Reborn prides itself on its story. It is a story-driven game; advertised as "mature" for "mature people" who are simultaneously allegedly too grown-up for a franchise made for children but somehow incapable of just playing something else that actually fits their tastes. They put their story and characters front and center, and when something like this happens, it is absolutely valid to judge said story. Even if Ame hadn't done this - put so much emphasis on their story - it would still be open to criticism, as a narrative is a way to get one invested in a game's setting, and this is but one facet of how Reborn fails at everything it sets out to do.

Reborn is a niche game that you should only play if you know entirely too much about Pokémon combat and you're a masochist. I enjoy playing it but you shouldn't shill it to people who think Platinum is peak difficulty.
Rejuvenation offers a similar level of challenge , while having an easy mode and not expecting you to put 1000 hours into Showdown to understand what's going on.
Present is incomplete but it has genuinely good writing, as expected of a detective mystery plot, and is full of fun side quests. The difficulty is generally pretty low as long as you take time to explore, but it's not SwSh low.
Infinite Fusion is one of the greatest labours of love I've seen in the pokémon community, maybe in video games in general. You can fuse monstrosities together out of any gen 1 and 2 mons, plus some selections from later games, and there's an assload of side quests. The basic plot and gameplay is mostly Fire Red again, but with enough additions and twists that it still feels fresh.
And then if none of that interests you, there's always stupid bullshit like Tri-Master, which has Digimon in it for some fucking reason. Or Mega Adventure or Green Remix.

Their utter inability to provide a genuine challenge, and total inability to understand even basic game design principles, was second. The only thing that has changed on that front is Ame removing anything she seems "overpowered" (read: actually capable of beating her and her associates' self-inserts in ways except the only method they want). You have made it abundantly clear you never had it argument, nor intended to engage in intelligent discussion, and this thread is nothing but bait.

Fair enough. I hang out in a few different Pokémon fan game communities (not the Reborn forums actually, they're awful) and I've seen a lot of people hear about the game from a let's play or whatever and decide it's awful without playing it. There's so much blind shilling and blind hatred that I genuinely can't tell who's played the game and who's regurgitating someone else's opinions.
The game has some shitty parts for sure. The entire Terra section is fucking dogshit, and some bosses like the fucking bug leader and the level 75 Arceus you encounter when you're like level 30 are just unfair and unfun. But the game as a whole feels like one of those weird PS1 RPGs that pound your ass into the ground unless you're at the top of your game all the time. I had fun putting teams together, planning my strategy for each boss, and abusing my own bullshit mechanics to beat theirs.
Not everyone is going to like that, but I think it's great for a specific audience, and I know a lot of people who feel the same way.

On the note of fan games: I found Lunar Dark to be somewhat comfy while also having some neat fakemon designs. I'm also enjoying Empyrean. Trying out new fangames can be fun when you have new fakemon and content to explore.

Despite what you may believe, a few usable pokemon you can find via sidequests doesn't mean that the game isn't stacked against you. Setting aside how they withold mons like fucking Magikarp, the game refuses to give the player any fucking break against the 6-Pokemon teams and early-evolved pokemon used in the earlygame gyms. That isn't fair difficulty, its just throwing shit at the player until they get tired of it.

Played this shit through to the end of the first region. Story is hilariously bad, Gold uses a living Arceus plate to try to take over the world and kills Red.
It's fun as fuck though. Tons of variety in mons, a couple Delta Species, Megas, gym leaders that aren't monotype, decent challenge without being soul crushing. Some unique ideas like having items that do moves and a time travel HM. Overall, even though the dialogue was ass, it was exactly what I wanted in a pokémon fan game.

Okay Jesus Christ this is getting embarrassing. I picked up Reborn after not playing a mainline pokémon game in ten years.
The first electric leader gave me some difficulty until I looked around and found some mons that were resistant to electric and eventually got through. The next gym iirc was grass, and you get a free Kricketune in a side quest that I used to sweep. The bug gym following that was hard until I realized you could destroy the forest terrain with fire moves, making the leader's entire strategy fall apart. Then I think it was the poison gym, which you can also manipulate and destroy with fire moves, and doing so actually is an instant kill on anything, including his ace. After that is the ghost gym which is based around abusing nature power and discharge to turn the electricity on and off, so if you do the same thing you end up completely derailing its strategy. I could go on through the whole game.
Basically every gym boss is a puzzle based around understanding the terrain. They aren't hard, they're just designed around a specific mechanic, which is exactly what a JRPG boss should be. It's not wrong when Final Fantasy has a boss that's immune to magic. It's not wrong when SMT has a boss that's immune to physical. And it's not wrong when Reborn has a boss that completely fucks water types or whatever. You learn, strategize and retry, and eventually you can make it look easy. I know people who have swept every gym with no KOs, people who do Nuzlockes, people who have played hard mode hacks of Reborn even.
It's by no means too hard. You just have to think a little.

This honestly. Earlygame isn't that bad even with the limited pokemon variety and the overpowered boss pokemon. As long as you mix up your team every now and then you can get through without too much trouble.
lategame has a lot of pretty shit fights though.

That's not the fucking point of pokemon, last time I checked. Forcing players into a specific playstyle isn't difficulty, its just being restrictive in what the player is allowed to do for no good reason.

While I'm of the camp that gameplay trumps story, the story exists for a reason. Saying "just skip it lol" avoids the problem instead of realizing that your entire motivation in the game is just because of the challenge instead of being invested in what you're doing.

Not necessarily, but its really frustrating in the earlygame. Later on, you're actually given tools to deal with it that don't involve a niche strategy, but you aren't in the first few gyms.

That's a double battle, you take out the retard with Eeveelutions first and then you two-on-one the main boss. It's piss easy once you understand it

There's like 20 and you pick up items that specifically tell you everything the terrains do, including exactly what moves it affects, how their damage/ effect changes, how to change the terrain, what it changes into, and even what messages will pop up in each situation. Not to mention the messages themselves. Oh durr it said the poison gas ignited when he used flamethrower, fuck me I'm so confused, God how am I supposed to understand this shit

Good thing this isn't an official mainline release then.
Like I said earlier, Reborn is a niche game for a very specific audience. You can't have your team of six cuties and face mash through the whole game with them. Some areas I benched my starter because he couldn't overcome the type advantage. In other areas, I ran two mons of the same type and swept.
It reminds me of SMT more than anything. Your monsters are tools for battle, and the only connection you gain with them is bonds formed by beating a strong enemy. Reborn isn't even as hard as most SMT games, honestly. Fucking Nocturne on Normal blows it out of the water.
It won't appeal to people expecting a normal Pokémon game, and I fully understand why those people don't like it. But that doesn't make it bad. It's just aimed at a different audience.

The only earlygame trainers that have 6 pokemons are the gym leaders and admins.

Romhacking autists haven't figured out much about the games yet and there aren't as many tools to use to fuck around with them as a result. IIRC some people figured out basic Pokemon editors and Dungeon editors, as well as some Starter Pokemon changers. Not much has been done yet in regards to changing the core gameplay or story, although I think there was a hack or two that let you control your partner and other party members. Everything else is just simple edits/modifications or randomizers. The main reason why it's such a pain in the ass is because of all the random generation involved for both the floors and the enemies. There isn't even a full decompilation of Red Rescue Team yet

The game is such a pain in the ass to deal with that it's just easier to remake the entire thing from scratch, like what Pokemon Mystery Universe did. It's the same reason why there aren't many major romhacks for other games like Ace Attorney or Kingdom Hearts

It's a 6v1 where the 1 is a Mega Evolution ripoff Tangrowth at Level 22 while you're carrying a midstage starter and a bunch of shitmons like Kricketune about 4 levels lower than it, with an extra 50 in its defenses, Grass/Poison so you can't poison it, Filter to weaken super effective hits, on a field effect blatantly in its favor, Growth that's Nasty Plot and Swords Dance in one because of the aforementioned field effect to boost its already-broken-for-this-point offenses, Mega Drain to restore its HP and that deals x1.5 damage due to said field effect, Vine Whip that does x1.5 damage because of said field effect, and a move it can't actually legally learn (Acid Spray) to prevent you from special tanking. And this is all before factoring in STAB from Tangrowth being Grass-type. This isn't genuine difficulty, it's a litany of bullshit, and every boss fight in the game is like this.

You can do that in SMT too? And Reborn. It's just stupid to do so if they're weak to an upcoming boss, so you temporarily bench them until the next area. Effectively you run a party of about a dozen pokémon and switch between them depending on the area. They even force you into this with level soft caps so you can't grind past difficulty.
Theoretically Pokémon games fuck you over for creating bad type match-ups too. It's just so rare to see an intentionally difficult opponent in a pokémon game that most people won't notice. The few exceptions are some of the leaders in gen 4 and the admins in Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, the rare attempts at giving the AI good teams with synergy.

Speaking of, I'm playing Pokémon XG right now and it kicks ass. It's mostly a rebalance mod, you and the enemy trainers get different mons, and they implemented mechanics from the later games like phys/spec split and fairy type. Holy fuck is it fun though. There's so much interesting shit you can do in doubles, and this game shows off all of them. It's not insanely hard, even bosses might not have 6 pokémon, but you are forced to learn their strategies and plan around them. The shadow pokémon are great too, there's a ton of new shadow moves, and when you purify you usually end up with a viable movelist. It's just excellently designed all around.

If you use Fury Cutter again a second time, you are doing, at most, 1/4. Only on the third consecutive use, at 160 power, are you going to do roughly 1/2. The only one lying here is yourself.

Dude this is getting ridiculous. PULSE Tangrowth isn't even hard. I fumbled my way through on my first attempt by just using STAB fire and psychic moves. It's a 6-on-1 and it spends every couple turns buffing itself instead of hitting you. Without any strategy other than pressing your highest damage move every turn, you should be able to win by sheer numbers alone.

Again, the first tangrowth is fought on a neutral field. Not my fault you haven't played the game.

You can easily reach that third fury cutter after putting it to sleep.

you're right, single handedly implementing and making proper pixel based sprites for all of gen 6(including shit no one wants like furfrou) and gen 7, and working with only a handful of other people to animate every single move properly (most of which in default essentials, basically use generic rpgmaker animations because the essentials animation editor is so terrible not even the creators of essentials use it) from gens 1 to 7 including z-moves in the abomination of coding that is the essentials animation editor probably doesn't qualify for being a human being. oh and did i mention that anyone making a fangame is free to use all of the assets they want from it unlike some OTHER games. I'm on a replay marathon. I just beat gen 3 and even though it was my first game and thus nostalgic it feels clunky as fuck these days. Platinum is my favorite pogey game and I figured it would be a good hack to play.

It's not a major mechanic, but it's used in a few interesting ways including a part where your future self stops the villain from getting a Heatran, preventing you from using it until you go back in time and catch it in front of your past self.
