The remakes ruined these games

Now there’s absolutely no reason to play Gold or Silver because the remakes are better in every possible way

Is there any reason besides nostalgia to replay these or crystal?

The remakes are slower, more linear, and have more handholding. I'd rather play Crystal over HGSS any day of the week.

The point of a remake is to make the original obsolete by updating the game while improving the flaws with the original. HGSS did this improving the Johto experience, but still carried over some of the obvious flaws with GSC while creating a few more, so it isn't a "perfect" game.

The world record speedrun of HGSS is only 20 minutes slower than Crystal, and I have a feeling that's mostly HP bars being ungodly slow. Even if that's 20 minuites of handholding bullshit I'll take it if it gives me a lot of extra content, which HGSS does. It's been a while since I first played it but is the sidetrack to the new Safari Zone required or not? That might add some extra time, like the Sevii Island thing does to FRLG.

if you have an actionreplay you can make a custom Key Item pouch/slot code to give yourself the GB sounds from the beginning of the game. You have to make sure to give yourself all the rest of the key items you also have at that point though, but if you're careful you can experience GB sounds the whole way with only a bit of cheating.

which sounds like it doesn't matter, right until what was previously a soft instrument on the GBC is now a good bit louder and harsher (best example is probably the park theme)

It also extends notes past their duration to fade them out smoothly, which makes it sound a bit sloppy (some songs are worse than others, slower songs like the above aren't as badly affected).
It all just sounds kinda bad in general. Cool idea, poor execution.

In a normal run, that's going to multiply pretty badly.

really, HG/SS suffers from being a Gen 4 game and subject to a bunch of needless slowness inherited from D/P/Pt
like, it's still part of an upwards speed up trend in the generation, but it's still slow

Gen 2 itself was great, pretty much everything you would expect of a sequel generation. All the mechanic changes, all the new features like breeding or pokegear, and so on.

However, johto as a region kind of sucks and it has a lot of shitmons and NFEs, or pokemon that are just unfun to use because they're defensively minded (skarmory, forretress, blissey, steelix, etc).
So you have all these great changes, fixes and improvements of gen 2, plus a lot of great music attached to one of the worst regions and worst regional dexes in pokemon.

GSC's aesthetic held up better than HGSS and HGSS didn't even touch the core issue with the originals (level curve and distribution). You can and should play GSC over HGSS just because they look prettier.

HGSS will always be there for you if you like following pokemon and the pokeolympics though. You could always just play both depending on how you feel.

HGSS just has do much extra shit put in, it has so much entertainment value.
I love GSC for what they are but I don't wanna go back to my Crystal copy now that I own SoulSilver. I'm glad they put so much love into recreating Johto and Kanto. That's not even bringing up how some mons are now catchable reasonably early like misdreavus, murkrow and larvitar. Steelix being catchable in the wild is a bonus too.
Honestly gen 4 was cool as hell with the amount of stuff you could do. Plat and HGSS just has so much stuff. The only other games that has anywhere near the amount of extra shit is BW2, with FRLG having devent postgame with the sevii islands.
Gens 3-5 were GameFreak's peak, you can feel that they had their shit together the most during that era.
It's a high that will never come again, but I don't really care. My copies ain't going anywhere and I haven't played a Pokemon game since USUM, which I barely finished.
