It got a bit better once they all started evolving, admittedly, but before that, the Escavalier had to carry the entire run and it didn't do it nearly as well as one would hope.
I don't recommend carrying a Larvesta with you through an entire playthrough because it will not have evolved by the time you're fighting Ghetsis
