One aspect I enjoy when revisiting the old games, especially before the special/physical move distinction, is how each type felt defined, like it filled its own niche. Nowadays, types just feel like window dressing, like another function.
Maybe giving types more unique abilities going forward could fix this a little, like electric types always win speed ties with non-electrics.

They're more defined now that we have weathers and terrains and more moves with unique effects and STAB is effectively required. In gen 1/2/3, you would just stick with whatever moves did the most damage since there were so few options and you might not have any decent STAB. Now you benefit massively from having team synergy and understanding what each type excels at.

A lot of types have unique mechanics though that act like little mini-abilities like how Electric types are immune to Paralysis, Fire types are immune to burn, Poison types are immune to Poison and remove Toxic Spikes on entry, Grass is immune to Leech Seed, Ghost is immune to being trapped etc. Just expand it so every type has a little mini bonus like that.

I think the real thing that killed that was Gamefreak trying to ensure every type had an 80ish BP move. So you get stuff like Seed bomb, energy ball dark pulse, flash cannon, etc, etc and it all blends together

Mamoswine isn't carried by speed, it's carried by Ground type for good secondary STAB and to take neutral damage from Rock instead of being weak to it. Plus Thick Fat to help against Fire type damage.

Basically Mamoswine is how you do bulky Ice well.
