The implications of the pokemon world (social standing, cultural shifts, availability, method of capture, technology level, intelligence) would make for an incredible mature story. No one's asking for M-Rated Starfy because that's shallow and tidy, but the Pokemon world is messy and leaves stones unturned and questions unanswered that could be conceivably addressed in a really fucking cool manner.

The first time you defeat a Team Rocket grunt in a Pokemon battle he pulls out a gun and shoots you. It's a really short game, but it teaches a good lesson.

Pokemon eugenics/genocide: the rival team wants to completely eliminate an undesirable pokemon (or type) from existence.
Your rival is a psychopath that forces his pokemon to legitmately kill other pokemon who "did him wrong" like a serial killer. Later you have to bring that pokemon to therapy or some dumb shit or end up euthanizing him because he's too fucked up mentally and sad music plays.
You see ghettos and people robbing others with pokemon just to get by and you feel sorry for them because the pokepoliticans are corrupted and you want to stop them.

Idk about "mature" but you simply can't have realistic and even somewhat logical take on pokemon world, because it stops making sense.

For example, humans would quickly go extinct if they had to compete with animals that have fucking superpowers.

On a serious note, go horror as many said. Maybe the Junji Ito kind of horror. Oh and permanent death to add to the theme and to amp the difficulty for an older audience, plus the concept of very graphic game overs, as opposed to whiting out.

There's a lot to work with here. The easy path would be to make it graphic like SamSho, add permadeath for immersion and call it a day, which is what I just did.
