Can anyone please explain why it's so taboo to enjoy pokémon for pokémon? When you play the games are the pokémon themselves really THAT much of an afterthought? Maybe it's just me but I look forward to pokémon games for the pokémon themselves.

If you only care for the monsters, you might as well just stick with anime since that's the only place where they actually matter and aren't more or less interchangeable with each other.

It's more than likely because there is more to the games than the monsters. It's always had stuff that requires attention because games need more than a pretty character to look at.

Pretty much this. Brand name alone doesn't justify entertainment. There's a reason people have more fond memories for side games versus some of the latest mainline games- the side games actually do something with the setting instead of doing superficial things that barely break away from the bog standard 8 gym crawl.
