FRLG is Gen 4, Emerald is Gen 5, DP is Gen 6, Platinum is Gen 7, HGSS is Gen 8, BW is Gen 9, B2W2 is Gen 10, XY is Gen 11, ORAS is Gen 12, SM is Gen 13, USUM is Gen 14, LGPE is Gen 15, SWSH is Gen 16, and the Expansion Pass is Gens 17 and 18 respectively.
Forms are treated as new Pokemon.

Trials are essentially gyms. There's no
mechanic as shadow pokémon in SM or any other mainline game, you don't become a champion in Colosseum/XD, etc. Also, not being developed by GF is not an arbitrary rule.

You're cherry picking now. You don't fight the Elite Four in SwSh but that doesn't make it a great deviation. Shadow Pokemon is just one mechanic under which the same usual formula applies. In LGPE you don't even fight wild Pokemon, that's a much bigger departure than anything Colosseum or XD offer.

There are also games in other franchises not developed by their main or original studio that are not considered to be spinoffs. Metroid Prime, Minish Cap, etc.

it's only a new generation if it's a newly-explored region that introduced new Pokemon.
if LGPE was classified as a gen it would be 7 (SM, USUM). the reason why it isn't a new generation, despite being a different region than the previous game, is because Kanto already exists and because it only introduced 2 Pokemon (which is too insignificant). otherwise, LGPE isn't even part of a gen because it's a spinoff due to having too many core-gameplay changes (catching mons, gym challenging).
as for SwSh DLC, both are still in the same region and only introduce a few new mons.

as far as I know the only two new Pokemon LGPE introduced were Melten and Melmetal. in retrospect I shouldn't even classify it as two since they're in the same evolutionary line, which is what I should've stated instead of individual Pokemon.

Yeah but one is still "New Pokémon". You would have to draw the line somewhere, say 90 new Pokémon. But what if they make a new game that only has 85 new Pokémon? Would that still be not significant enough? Let's lower that to 85 then. Same issue repeats when they make one with 80. It doesn't make sense to draw the line in any place other than between none and at least one.

Every x.5 is part of that gen. Gen 4.5 is Gen 4, but just an addition. Every .5 is also, technically, DLC. Isle and Tundra would be in Ultra Sword 2 and Ultra Shield 2 but without making you replay the whole game. Let's Go is a weird outlier, it's not gen 8 but it's not a expanded game in Gen 7. I'd honestly call Let's Go Gen 1.5. It's literally gen 1 with but with dark, steel and fairy and a better movepool, otherwise it's the same.

I realize that, that's why I said "I'd honestly", to tell you it's my opinion. I don't think it's actually gen 1.5, but it's closer to gen 1 as a whole then gen 7, despite being a gen 7 game. It's the only time in Pokemon were a new game could be compared to an older game if we're talking strictly features.

On firered, both deoxys will appear as attack form. On leafgreen, both deoxys will appear as defence form. But firered deoxys will behave as attack form (attack form stats and moves) while leafgreen deoxys will behave as defense form deoxys (defense form stats and moves)

LGPE feels so out of place i don't think it should be considered as a .5 entry at all. The solution here would be class it as something completely different and call it Gen 8b, 8 Alpha or something along those lines.

Hang on, i came up with a retarded solution, if we're considering only calling LGPE a mainline because you can transfer mons to SWSH, then GO should be considered too since we'll eventually be able to transfer from there. So my genius solution is to call Pokemon GO Gen 7G and we can can call LGPE Gen 8G. and if we get another GO game before Gen 9, we can can call it 8.5G and go from there.
