People shit on the idea but an open world or at least open worldish pokemon game would've been great as it can provide the hardcore experience of doing every puzzle or the casual one

They had to after Masuda spilled the beans on the dex cut. After that, all the hardcore fans were absolutely pissed beyond any point of recovery, so the best they could do is appeal to the casual side of the Pokemon fanbase, which worked.
