Because it's a fun and engaging story. No one ever said that the writing was a masterpiece, but it was something different from the standard pokemon story. Ghetsis' ambitions was "subtlely" hinted at the start and he was a generic villain overall, but that didn't mean he wasn't a entertaining and charismatic one.

What the fuck am I reading? Literally any time any character talks to or about Ghetsis they make it clear they think he's an asshole and a schemer.
At no point does the game want you to assume he's on the up and up. The benefit of the doubt only ever extends to N.

Which is why the question is always brought up.Plus its one of the last interesting questions the games have left considering GF made it clear they don't give a crap about keeping track of past lore.

Because it challenges the central premise of the franchise. Because "truth" vs. "ideals" is a central point in many regards, and is delved into in an interesting way. Because it was the first time that the leader of an evil team was a genuinely good person. Because Bianca + Cheren as a pair make a better rival than anyone aside from maybe Gary. The story is shit, the execution and set pieces are interesting. And they're only interesting comparatively to prior Pokémon games.

A lot of people exclusively play Pokémon and don't have much to compare it to. Pokémon characters are usually very one-dimensional and boring, but fans are the ones that flesh them out. Bea is basically a non-character in Sword and Shield. She has a little bit of text around her, but fans obsess over characters and try to pull out as much detail as their minds will let them.

Not really, the story in Gen 7 would be better than Gen 5 if it weren’t for the plot holes around lusamines motivations. It depends on if you think sun and moon is canon or if you think USUM is.
Gen V has a story worse than HGSS, but it’s at least more consistent than the 3 gems after it.

And just because gens 1-4 don’t have a Final Fantasy tier story doesn’t mean that they’re automatically worse. In many ways, it made them better, because stories in games don’t have to be intrusive unless there’s a reason for it. And Gen V didn’t not have any reason for it.

Even for a pokemon game I wouldn't say so. The concept is definitely very interesting but the execution is so terribly lacklustre. All the "questioning the morality of pokemon battling" stuff is completely sidelined and proven to be irrelevant in the climax of the story. The plot seems deep and thoughtful from far but it's really just a half assed attempt to do something different.

A theme of the game is cooperation in spite of differences. Not unusual to illustrate a point like that by having a BIG BAD to team up against.

Gen 5 is the closest thing to a good story a mainline Pokemon ever had.
Gen 7 is ok at best and has abysmal pacing and exposition

SM is consistent but absolutely lacks a satisfying conclusion to all of Lillie, Lusamine and Gladion's stories. USUM is a mess because of the Necrozma changes but at least it doesn't feel as unsatisfyingly unfinished. Ultimately I feel like BW is better than both of them because at least BW has a proper character arc and conclusion to all of N, Ghetsis and Team Plasma.
