I don't think Gen 5 is bad by any means, it's just that they came out at the point where I was least interest in Pokemon as a whole - I was 18 at the time and had other things going in my life and I didn't really get back into Pokemon until suddenly every was interested in XY for some reason prior to their release. Even going back to BW now, I can see that they're objectively good but I just don't feel any interest or attachment to the games at all.
