Not that it really matters whether the skunk monster does the funny fart attack. I personally just find the idea of it using it's tail "Turret" for attacks like that more interesting.

...perhaps, but until Gamefreak returns my emails about whether Skuntank's shit out of their tail tip, there is a bit of abstraction involved in pokemon biology.

If what you care about a Pokemon is unique type matching and mechanical usage, maybe. But it seems kinda odd to characterize a Dark intimidating skunk pokemon as anything other than Dark/Poison without wildly changing the design to play into the inferno tank angle (which could be fun in a what-if sense now that I type it out).

Because "skunks are scary", I assume Which they aren't really, but that's beside the point.
Or maybe the fart sort of motif made it seem more mischievous, which is in line with dark type characterization and the little I know of Japanese Yokai mythology.

Eh, in the end designing RPG monsters is an art, not a science, so there is some level of "It's the way it is, because it's the way it is" when it comes to typing. It works, so long as in the end the design roughly matches the tone, which I think Skuntank does.

Be neat to see new pokemon based on skunks that are given different designs and types, but it's pretty understandable why they probably won't do that anytime soon.

If I'm thinking of the same episodes, it doesn't fart, it sprays from it's tailtip off screen, or for stunky it does some weird handstand flip that launches an orb (which is a pretty weird way to depict it). The scent is drawn to look gaseous like a fog around the area because that's just how animation shorthand works.

I'm complete shit, and I don't play competitive at all, but a female skuntank that I had for a while used Charm, Toxic, Venoshock, and I think Bite. It's probably not the best or reliable setup by any stretch, but it was fun.

And also, I imagine early cartoons played a part, where it's a lot easier to draw stink using fog and vapor as a shorthand (because it just looks better animated than liquid oil), which also causes you to draw the connect to farts.

my comp days are far behind me and i never considered using one in that setting, but he's one of my go-tos for inserting into annual gen IV/V playthroughs or hacks. i usually just run poison jab, crunch, either sunny day or rain dance depending on how i'm structuring the team and flamethrower or dig for the respective weather move. it's safe to say jupiter left a lasting impression, since very few pokemon hold this honor to me.

flamethrower looks bad in gen 4, it doesnt seem powerful and it's never aligned with the sprites in a good looking way. Solar Beam is alright. But gen 3 really has the best looking moves, they're very quick and powerful looking and have amazing sounds to go with.

sprite-aligned "beam" moves are usually hit or miss. try using gen iv hyper beam on your ally in a double battle and see how silly that looks
