I don't even mind the modern designs. It's how static everything looks.
The artwork, the animations for the models in-game, everything looks so goddamn static and boring.
I remember getting one of those old "Pokedex books" with a magazine back in the day that had every Mon in Ruby and Sapphire and flipping through it just to see Sugimori's iconic as fuck dynamic artwork.
Pic related was always one of my favourites.
Just goes to show just how unwilling to put in effort people become when they're flush with cash I guess.

The official art isn't made to be dynamic. Don't get me wrong I'd love cooler official art but they're obviously not going for that. You'll always have the TCG for dynamic official art.

I think it's most obvious looking at various bird Pokemon.
Taking Fearow and Unfezant as the main examples, look at their wings. With Fearow you can see two rows of feathers, there's some little bit of ruffling at the tips and the transition between brown and cream is a lot smoother without a consistent line in where the colour changes. With Unfezant, there's only one row of feathers (though not visible in this image), its feathers all have the same very smooth consistent shape and whenever the feathers go from grey to black or vice versa, it's a very clean cut with visible outlines segregating the colours.
Although this doesn't really make too big a case for anatomy, so a more appropriate example there would be something like Obstagoon where its legs are just... tubes. Two cylinders. Comparing it to something in the same gen, Grimmsnarl, there's a very clear difference between the two (even if Grimmsnarl's "muscles" are actually hair). Even Toxtricity manages to have the tiniest bit of definition in its legs, despite them being so stubby.

If you think about it, Swanna is the only birdmon that's anatomically correct. If you see it opening its wings in its BW sprite animation, you'll see it has big, strong arms, like real life birds do, while all other birdmons have twigs for arms (you can notice that more on Pidgeot, Fearow, Articuno, Ho-Oh, and Braviary) and they would break easily if they tried to flap their wings in real life. Pelipper doesn't even look like it could possibly function at all, it has no neck, no skull, its feet are coming out of nowhere, if it tried to stand it would fall over, same thing with Togekiss.

Kanto Lurantis just looks bad. Doesn't convincingly emulate the gen 1 style.
Making Meowstic a eeveeloution clone feels like cheating. The eyes aren't the problem, but rather the fact that it's a quadruped. It's not as though Kanto had a rule against upright mammals. Raichu, the Clefairy line, the Jigglypuff line, and Chansey exist.
Original Inkay looks better. Redesigning an intentionally cute pokemon to look aggressive is another example of fundamentally misunderstanding the classic aesthetic. It should have incorporated elements similar to Omanyte or Poliwag to maintain its intended cuteness.

All these "redo in Kanto style" images are wrong. The whole point is that as the franchise continued the number of excessive spikes, stripes, and spots littered the Pokemon. If you want to make them look like Kanto, remove the garbage from them.
