We know, but they censored it. In the original script, he is the bad guy, and basically he just betrayed them to steal the machine and keep everything for himself. then they rejected the idea because it was too much for kids, "bad example".

But him planning to just go solo villain also makes sense, but it seems meeting Rui gave him a change of heart for real and he did become more heroic for real.
