What I don't get is their relation to dires. Are totems just a separate thing all together that just coincidentally happen to also be large? Are they a subspecies of dire that are unique to Alola?
If so is it due to the various Tapus being powerful guardians who "regulate" the culture of the island? Do dires exist on Alola in addition to Totems?
I think the dire concept is pretty interesting and I feel like there's potential in Alola. For example: if totems were a more niche and less hostile subspecies of dire, more researchers would probably flock to that region in hopes of better understanding dire-human relationships, only to be forced out by the native Alolans or Tapus
