Hop is a mediocrely writen character that happened to be in a franchise that was used to make even worse and blander characters like hau or any rival from gen 6. Because pokemon fans only play pokemon, they think it's a good character.

No he's profoundly different in his intrusiveness. Multiply the amount of dialogue by ten, further emphasize how he exists to kiss your feet, and reiterate the same points for his character arc until completion and then make that comparison again. I do not give a single solitary fuck about a rival character who's known I'm better than him from the very beginning accepting that I'm better. The entire rivalry is a sham, at least Hau did us the courtesy of treating the whole thing casually to begin with.
