How far do you personally invest into a game?

I tend to play the MC as their own character, rather than as just myself.

I usually name the MC after myself. Sometimes I'll name the rival after people I know, but I find it hard to roleplay with nicknames for my pokemon, not sure why.

Yeah, I did a Nintendo 64 theme for my XD run. Banjo the Ursaring, Kazooie the Dodrio, Saharah the Camerupt, etc. etc.

I actually have certain nicknames that I have 'standardized' for certain mons, though.

I name the MC my usual username/ nickname, because I associate with it more than my first name (zach is a really common name). Other than that, not much, I usually imagine that the MC is, even in the context of the game, a reincarnated version of me that is aware they are in a video game and so on, kinda to help rationalize the fact that I make decisions based on video game logic rather than how a person in the actual pokemon world would act. It's autistic, but in video games I like to add context to decision to help with immersion. I also nickname all my pokemon, but it's not usally tied to me, I'll usually pick a theme because it makes it easier to think of names. I usually get fairly attached to my mons too, I have a lot of really memorable moments with shitmons like raticate (I fucking love my boy Pit) and torkoal (turns out it's not much of a shitmon).

I don’t nickname one the first playthrough, but tend to do in te following ones. And it has to be named with that Pokémon in mind, not things unrelated ie Lucario-Colmillo (Fang in Spanish), Lapras-Nereid (Sea nymph), Chandelure-Jack Skellington... and so on

I don't name the MC or rival after IRL people. I do sometimes name my pokemon ingame though, just not necessarily based on things I like. In competitive I don't name my mons.

I find it easier to digest the story like that as opposed to 'me' being a young kid being the savior of the region.

I nickname pokemon based on themes (randomly selected)

On the first playthrough, I use my name for the MC, but I use the default name for the rival and I rarely ever name my Pokemon. After that, it's all default names.

It's not like the characters I play as are immensely complicated, (I usually do in other games but Pokemon doesn't really lend itself to roleplaying interesting characters)
It's just I already have a 'canon' team set out for every region - but I don't like planning my teams out when I play, so it's not really like I'm RPing as myself - just a generic trainer.

Growing up me and the older kid next door had a heated rivalry when it came to Pokemon. My favorite Pokemon being Starmie and his
was Houndoom. We eventually gained the nicknames Crimson (rival) & Cobalt (me) from other kids in our area due to those being our favorite colors.
